While I'm sitting around waiting on my new NES (I managed to break my last one.) i decided to build my vacuum forming table and draw up some plans for a case.
I started by laying the parts out the way i wanted them (I forgot to scan the speaker but i plan on putting that right below the controller.):
Then drew around them with my noob Illustrator skills:
Yeah i don't think it will be too unbalanced. The screen is much lighter than the battery. I also like the feel of the original controller and would rather not remake it with tact switches to put it on the sides of the screen.
If you put the controller on both sides of the lcd, you dont have to rewire it with tact switches, you cant split the controller PCB and reconnect the traces that you cut.
I just ordered some .08 inch styrene for the case and am still waiting on my new NES. USPS tracking is terrible. It's been saying "Status: Electronic Shipping Info Received" for 4 days and probably won't change until after i get it. Hopefully it will come either today or tomorrow.
I just printed my original design(Everything else i came up with looks horrible.) and it didn't fit on the page. The scan of the screen was double the size it was supposed to be. That's why the original design looked kind of top heavy. I scaled it down to the size it should be. Now it looks like this:
Yeah i knew what you meant. I came up with a few designs with a split controller but i still like this one better.
My new NES came today so i ripped that apart. Took forever to get the damn RF box off. Then while flattening all the caps i flattened one of them into a chip without realizing it and turned it on. Made a nice purple screen and fried the chip. I replaced it with one from my broken NES and it worked fine. I'll finish all the wiring tommorow (Ugh cart-slot relocation).
I heard you can cut the edges of the screen ( I read, I'm not fully sure), maybe it will make the desing look more like a gameboy, unless you want the round look.

Only thing you can safely cut off is the top after you led mod it. If he wanted a gameboy design, he could always widen the sides to match the with of the psone screen and split the controller accordingly.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, in the most recent picture you posted, it looks like you have the NES mobo below the screen instead of under it. You could shorten the length by a good amount if you put the nes mobo under the screen. Oh wait then it wouldnt be comfortable to hold the controller then.
Ah, nevermind.
I thought about it. I have a hip gear screen laying around that would of been perfect for that, but i decided to go with authentic hardware. Then i printed out a design to scale and slapped myself cause it was freaking huge. If i manage to break another NES mobo(I really hope i don't.) i will probably go with that.

The screen is on top of the NES mobo, the NES mobo is just that huge.
I wired everything with the exception of the cartridge slot today, and nothing works! Niether the NES or the screen turn on. Both of my voltage regulators are getting about 9.2V and outputting nothing. I'm recharging my battery now because it's been sitting around for a few weeks. Hopefully that fixes the problem.
the nes mobo isnt that big. Its roughly the size of a PSOne mobo. If it is placed directly under the screen, the only amount that is sticking out is about the size of a nes controller
I don't like that design at all. To me, it looks ugly. I would try to make it landscape. Or at the very least more wide and less tall. Or the very VERY least move the controls up.
