Hello, My name is Josh and im very new to the portable world. I picked up a magazine at VONS the other day saying "Hack a nintendo". I read it and day dreamed about the good times I had with my fellow past life partner! I open the magazine and went stright to the article. In big bold letters it said "Build your own portable NES system.". Astonished that this was even possibal, I bought the magazine and read the article for 2 days now. Noticing the article is from a book named "Hack video game conculs", I went stright to the book stores to find out more due to the low amount of detail they went into on how to build the NESp. All the book stores said they were "Backordered". When I went to amazon it did say the book was not released yet but will be soon. I preorderd it and I am now awaiting arrival of the book. In the meen time I got started on a old NES I have and used the very little info they gave on how to hack the nintendo. They went into very little detail on how to wire the controllers and how to boost the video signal form the NES. Basicly I desoderd everything it said isnt required off. The RF box and expac port. During the process I did crack a small peice of something.

In the end this is how it is. Please give me some direction on these questions. btw I have very little electrition expreiance. Thanks.

1 I have no clue how im going to wire the controllers. How am I going to split the circit board?

2 I have no clue what how to wire this video signal to be boosted. I bought a PC board and the supplys i needed to make the video booster supplyed to me by the magazine.

3 Seince I cracked this peice, is the motherboard useless now? or would this peice survive after a crack like that.

(*NOTE* Its not a chip , its a flat black peice.)

Anyway here are pics of what Ive done so far and some other things.

Thats well documented, just about as good as Mindstein.

One question is what magazine and what month are you using as a guide for this?

I'm afraid to say that the little black thing you broke is a chip. It's a resistor pack more accurately. If the nes still works I guess it's not too damaged, but you might have to replace it.

It was from a extremetech magazine. I basicly am stuck on how im going to wire the controller and ampin the video. Please let me know of some good info about this. thanks!

Ofcouse I prefer to just strip the controllers outer casing and use the wire coloring they have there.

My only advice is to put links to the pics instead of embedding them into the page, or putting a warning in the title of the thread. If a person with a 56k modem tried to read this, they'de probably have a heart attack. Though dont worry about it, I got a cable modem, so Im good.

Yep! I have a super-cruddy-dial-up connnection and I waited for 10 mins and the pics still didn't finish loading

You could use www.imageshack.us , they give you thumbnail code
