Necessary?

Post by THON »

Hi everyone,

I've been reading a lot on portables, and I think I want to try the PSone and Dreamcast. I'll start with the PSone to get the hang of it, and it seems simple enough, but I just want to know why it's necessary to extend the ribbon cable? Couldn't you just take everything out and stuff it in a case like that?

Extending the ribbon cable gives you more freedom of design, since you can move the disc reader almost anywhere you want. You certainly don't have to do it if you're making your own case, but if you're building one of Ben's designs from the book then you probably have to.

Great, thanks for the reply. Also, if I had a regular PSX, would the PSone's power cord work with it?

I don't think so; I'm no PSX buff, but if I can remember correctly, the PSOne actually has an external PSU that supplies a standard 7.5 volts to power the whole unit, whereas the original PSX uses an internal PSU and requires multiple voltages.

Damn. I wanted to try making the first Ja(panese)PSP. Is there any way to get it portable with the regular cord? Or would that just be a hell of a lot of work?

The two cords are different you will not be able to interchange them. But if your making a portable there shouldnt be any cords, isnt that kind of the point?

Well, you kind of have to use the cord to portabalize a PSone (notice how I said one and not X). But I ripped apart my Japanese PSX (and stupidly cut the power strip--luckily me and my trusty soldering iron were able to fix it), and it looks almost (if not completely) identical to the American PSX.

Now I was reading and it looked like some people made their PSP's out of the larger PSX. I would GREATLY appreciate it if someone would be kind enough to draw (or show) me a diagram of wiring the large PSX to batteries!
