I've been in this discussion on the Vintage Computer forums. Buy a 1GB compact flash drive & set the pagefile to it if you want, it should last AT LEAST a few months.

Indeed. Seriously, the resason people want vista is vista exclusive games. And games wont be vista exclusive suddenly if we DONT BUY VISTA.

Its pretty simple, really!

Also, Vista is too new to be worthwhile - It's bound to have its flaws and security loopholes. Like the 1st gen 360s which are likely to get the Ring of Death, mainly 3 segments.

If you want the look of Vista, just use XP and use some sort of program to adjust the appearance to look like Vista - simple

Hmm good idea. But I gotta question.

I got the msstyle Vista theme for XP. But where do I get the .dll and the hack?

Search for a replacer on google. Since it's in use, you need to use a special program, use safe mode, or disable it.

Why would you want Vista anyway? It sucks bawls and XP is the same but better. Or you could always go for the smallest OS in the world. The 1.44 MB OS Contiki!

People want Vista because it's something that is new and proposed better. However I have used Vista and its' a joke. You think there are security flaws? They've got about 100 patches out for the system already. A guy in my VB class that installed VB studio 2005, had to download and install three patches to get the damn thing installed. And to get it working you have to right-click the program and run as administrator. That's a joke.

Vista currently has been compared to how XP was when it first came out. No backwards compatibility, very buggy and with lots of problems. Don't expect Vista to get good 'til it has SP1 released.

As much as I hate XP, XP Pro SP2, is far superior to Vista currently. That might change but I don't expect it to become a reality for at least a year. And I've made a promise to myself, and have mentioned it to others around me. If I have to reinstall Windows XP, I'm installing a linux distro instead. Any and really everything I need/want to do on a computer can done under linux now... even World of Warcraft.

No backwards compatibility!? I've NEVER had any compatability problems w/ Vista! Oh, & the administrator thing can be worked around by simply just using the Administrator account. (there's 2 levels of administrators in Vista)

But then you bypass most of the new security features and miss the whole point of having Vista in the first place. (Unless the only point in having it is the shine factor...)

I have no reason to upgrade to Vista, and since I'm not a hardcore gamer I don't care if new games don't support XP. Vista's just shiny and dumbed down, that's all. I think the interface is unappealing. (I use windows classic mode, if you were wondering.) As for the security updates, I don't even update XP and have no problems so why should I care? (For home, I mean. At work environments it's another matter.)

I'll just stick with XP for the foreseeable future, and when nothing works on it anymore I'm going back to Apple. (Not Linux because I want my primary machine to just work without having to mess with it for hours, and I use too much retail software for it to be viable anyway.)

There isn't any difference. For *normal* administrators, the only thing that happens is you receive a million "Do you want 'X' to do 'Y'" messages.

Look when you can't even install Visual Basic 2005 on Vista without installing some patches you know the backwards compatibility is not there. It's a Microsoft product that I"m trying to install on a Microsoft product and it still doesn't work out of the box. That's proof enough for me that it sucks.

The whole run as administrator is Microsoft's attempt to catch up with the Apple and Unix work on how they safe guard people from running things they shouldn't, and without having the computer configured. It's an overly done way to protect yourself from actions you do.

As far as I'm concerned if Microsoft wanted to do it right then have Vista where the accounts are setup and protected. Access the Administrator account only for configuraions and force the users to use a standard account. This wold add security, this would add protection from viruses and it keeps "geniuses" who think they know what their doing from hosing their system.
