I'm working on my dream NESp. First of all, it won't be hand-held per se. It will be designed around a Advantage controller. What I plan on doing is designing a vacuum-formed case based on the Advantage, with a PSOne screen in the back at about a 45 degree angle. The cart will insert in the front, under the controls, kind of in the same relation as a regular NES. I'll wire up the Advantage's 1-2 player switch for the hell of it, but also provide a controller port for the second player too.
So it'll be more like a mini table-top/laptop configuration. It'll have a nice arcade feel with the Advantage controls. I should draw up some concept art. Whatcha guys think?

Yeah, actually I'm trying to think of a way for the screen to retract. Then it would be more portable. Thing is that I don't want to much thicker than the Advantage and the cart together. Maybe I'll just make it fold down and lock. But any movings parts will make it less sturdy. I dunno.HK-47 wrote:Sounds cool, but make it so you can tilt the psone screen.

Already drew up a concept, anyway: http://www.doomportables.org/images/nesmock3.png
5" Sony PSOne Screen (the official one)
Turbo Buttons
Accepts real NES cartridges
Stereo Sound (probably not possible with the NOAC)
S-Video Output
Accepts Famicom carts
NES Max Directional Pad (more for looks than function)
Runs off of 4 AA's
Low Battery Light (not in the concept, still thinking where to add that one)
AC Jack
Two controller ports
I'd rather have a portable that runs real cartridges than a flash card full of ROMs. I just don't feel that's authentic... and I'd likely be using the NESeqze hooked up as a console when not in use. Stereo sound would be nice, but I'd likely be using a NOAC and you can only get stereo off a real board. The S-Video can't be gotten from a regular NES, but there are composite->S-Video adapters available, and while it's not an increase in screen quality, it's at least standardized with my other possibly future portables. I could use the RGB video chip, but once again it uses the NOAC, not the real board, and besides, I've heard of incompatibilities...
What I would go for is one of Kevin Horton's new NES-on-an-FPGAs. That would solve the stereo/RGB question easily, be easier to fit in, and make me feel better about the consistency with a real NES.
I toyed with the idea of a built-in Game Genie, but then I realized I would never use it, it would look out of place, and I'd much rather have just a spiffy NESeqze logo on startup. Possibly with an encoded "Nintendo!" voice sample-- but then again, building a working device might be the first priority.
(by the way, i know this sounds stupid, but it's really been bugging me... i can't think of a good place on the concept to put two led lights, one for power and one for battery life (multi-color to indicate charge). if anybody has any suggestions where to put them, i'm all ears.)

My Dream NESp will accept original Nes carts, have a PSOnce Screen, stereo sound and can still be used like a console using all of its features (4 players with the adapter, gun, globes, etc.).

I'm all alone, dealing with my broken heart. Why I have feelings if they feel so bad. All seems so dark, will I ever see light?
