Controller Ground

Post by tappan »

I was curious if I could tie all of the controller's grounds together?
i.e. 8 pins of data and all 4 grounds tied together.
e.g. I could put the controller connectors into a separate unit, and connect it to my portable using a 'mouse' Comm(9 pin) cable/connectors. Kind of like a ps1/ps2 multitap. It would save space on my portable. But still enable multiplayer if you hook it to a TV.

Thanks
I keep cutting it off.. and it's still too short.

Yeah, but there's only one data line for n64 controllers, so you can fit all 4 controller ports into a 6 pin connector.

That's right... I went back and looked at the pinout.
I'll still probably use an older comm connector because I have a couple of them lying around. I could use a newer PS/2 connector. It has 6 pins. Er.. 6 pins plus that center thing( :) ).

I was thinking that without the controller connector's in the case, it would cut down on the thickness.

But one thing that still causes it to be thick is the jumper/expansion pack.
It would be a bugger to rewire, but worth it to make it lay horizontally.
What gauge wire should I use though? It can't be too resistant.

I was able to pick up some cheap male/female 6-pin S-Video/PS/2 connectors. We'll see how well it works next weekend.

Hey tappan,

Did it work? You may have revolutionized the world of portables.

Finally registerred :D .

Glad to hear that you will post the results. After reading this thread, I am very interested in seeing how it turns out. I have one concern however. If you use a 6-pin(a PS/2 is technically 7-pin do to centre bar) connector, you would have common voltage, 4 data, and common ground. If the ground line from the 64s ports go straight to ground(I can't remember and I don't have any open right now), that is fine. And of course having 4 separate data lines is fine, but if you have a common voltage, wouldn't you need a 4-way voltage divider, because you need 4X V++ going through to power 4 controllers, but if only 2 are being used, then you get 2X V++ going to each controller, which causes 2X signal(data) strength, which could short the 64(or cause screwed responses, not sure which). Long story short, unless you use a 9-pin connector for separate V++, wouldn't it be important to have either a divider of 4 regulators?

voltage doesn't add up that way, draw does.

Yea, I was tired when I posted that. What I ment to say is that you would need 4 times current, which dould cause you problems. I have got to stop posting at 2am.
