HeatSink

Post by SpearMan74 »

Tommarow I am going to preform the expansion pack relocation(that is, if the 64 comes tomarrow), and to save a little space i had a different heatsink idea.Instead of 3 bulky ones on 3 different chips, what if i take a solid piece of metal from say...a computer, not paper thin metal, but the thicker kind, and link all the chips. I'm figuring it'll work the same because the heat will be spread out much more, and with a fan, I'm thinking this will be a sound idea.

I would just cut it to fit on all 4 chips (including expansion), and a little extra around to spread the head. Just was askin for your guys' opinion on it. This is probably what i will end up doing.

I know from experience that N64 ram gets hot so just a piece of metal won't help much. What you can do is use a small heatsink and a small fan

Ok thanks. Well when i do a heat test, will there be an obvious sign that tells me they've gotten way too hot?

Sorry about that being really vague, but I'm tired of buying new n64s...

If you can't comfortably have a finger on it, its too hot.

id personally set the boundary a little higher, around "too hot to touch for more than half a second". Im thinking like 60C (thats 140F). which is still inside the safe zone (for most Pentium chips at least).

if you do the spit-test and it sizzles, its too hot :P

Meh, better safe than sorry. If the heatsink melts through your floor, then you really screwed up. :D

I think around 140 F should be fine but I think wou will need more than a piece of metal to help cool it. I would personally go with a single small heatsink with thermal grease where the chip contactsthe piece of metal.

Although in a portable, heat is not good.

Melting glue, plastic etc etc.

Cooler is better.

Yes i do have that thermal "glue" stuff, and i'll know if im preforming the expansion pack relocation in 2 hours. On the expansion pack and the regular ram chip there will be an extra piece of metal because they're lower than the other two main big chips. Just sayin

Just use the orginal N64 heatsink. Its exactly what you want to do, except that it doesn't cool the expansion pack. You can also mod it a little bit if it's too big.

I just left mine intact and I still had room.

Are you talking about the 3 little heat blocks on chips? Those are just there to transfer heat to the monster heatsink on top, they don't really dissipate much heat on their own.

No, I mean the heatsink. Let me describe it for you, it's gigantic, it's shiny metal it screws into all those blocks. It fit perfectly in my design... without batteries of course

Wo, that surprising, your case looks too thin, you must've really packed stuff in your case.

Not to take over a your post but does anyone know a good small heatsink that will work for the N64 chips. I think (well know) all three have to be cooled. What hetsinks do you all reccomend (preferably one someone has used on their portable). I would like to know a mouser part number if that is where you got it or where you can order it online. I prefer mouser, just give the equivelent part from mouser if you didn't get it there.

Ah, forget all that. What do I need going by Mousers filters (size, shape, mounting type, etc.) I know what SMD is and all but I don't know what would be best. I am tempted to just order like 100 different kinds and test them all  (nice price from mouser for all their heatsinks).

Please help :?

before making any drastic web orders, I say scavenge around for some dead computers, Pentium 1 or 2 chips usually have something reasonable, or else you can cut down anything else thats too big. Mine came from an old Pentium Pro
