SNES Original

Post by Billybb347 »

This may seem newbish but, why can't one use the original SNES (as opposed to the miniSNES)?
Is it that Ben is not recomending it because it has an updated motherboard?
I say this because I'd rather use my own system instead and get the PSOne Screen

No reason, other than it's larger and takes up more power.
Hey, sup?

I'm actually working on one. TIP: you might wanna try and get one without an apu. Don't know what an apu is? Search google for: Snes Apu.

If you're going to use a full size SNES, just make sure that it's one that doesn't have a separate audio board. With the heat shielding and stuff removed, the full size SNES board is actually flatter than the SNES mini board and it isn't really that much bigger than the SNES mini's board either.

Thanks for all the help. How do I find out if it has a seperate APU?

That's the hard part. Only way of knowing is opening. (not sure if this is true but their might be a production year a certain year wil have most change of not having it.)

There might be a way to tell by looking at the serial number of the SNES, but I don't know. I'd probably just open it up and see.

The label on the bottom of the SNES has an imprinted 4 digit number. The first two digits are the year it was produced. The second two I don't know, maybe batch number or production week. Of the two SNES's I have, the one made in '91 does have an APU, the one made in '93 does not.

As far as I know, ONLY SNES mobos from 1991 have that bulky APU unit sticking off the board. After that, technology improved and they reduced the size to just one or two DIP chips. :D

BTW, my second SNESp really demonstrates how well you can make a portable look with an older motherboard. Take a look at the thread:http://benheck.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php? ... ight=snesp

Hope that helps.

Mine doesn't have a stamped number on it. :(
And their doesn't seem to be any production dates.

Oh well, I have been perusing around the fourms and I think that I will not gouge my SNES but will use the FCTwin for my portable (Does it use normal Phillips screwdrivers to open?). I'll post details on that in another thread.
