Khaag's Les Paul guitar progress thread (Update: 05/29/07)

Post by khaag »

I'm building a Les Paul in wood shop at school so I thought I'd post some progress up here. Some specs:

-Made out of Alder
-The body will be separate from the neck
-Will be essentially the same as Zakk Wylde's signature bullseye
-Length 17-1/4"
-Width at top bout 12-1/2"
-Width at waist 8-1/2 if i remember correctly...

The dimensions are the same as the real Les Paul.

The rough body:

Its going to be like this when done:

Tomorrow, I'm going to be shaping the body to give it a carved top.

I can't tell by the depth, is it acoustic or electric? An acoustic Les would definitely be eyebrow-raisingly cool! Nice job so far.

OK, I'm at school right now, but I just had wood shop, and shaped my body. I'm gonna stay in at lunch to sand it, and I will post pics of the shaped body when I get home. Oh man this is looking good! It is GOING TO BE SWEET!

Well not one to dissapoint, here is my sanded body so far. It's kinda hard to see the contour of the face in the pictures, but its enough to give you the idea. In person you can really see it... and feel it.

Ahh, the fruits of the ever-so-tedious hand plane:

I am starting the neck tomorrow. Man, this thing is moving along quicker than I expected! I'm going to be shredding this thing in no time! :D

These are the pickups I am putting in this beast.

Well, i'm not a big fan of Les Pauls (more of a Strat man myself), but this will be sweet! Are you winding your own pickups? I'm guessing that either the fretwork or finish will be the hardest part. You might not like this idea, but I think you should add Strat style body contours to it. It would make it unique and more comfortable to play. Just my opinion though. By the way, you said the neck will be seperate from the body, but I want to know if it's going to be bolt on (like a Fender) or glued in (like a Gibson). I'm assuming that by seperate from the body you meant that it would not be a set neck.

Lookin' good man. Keep up the awesome work! :D

EDIT: Nevermind about my question about the pickups. :P
I'd imagine right now you wish you were a cuttlefish...

Lookin' Good. You should paint it different from the black and white one. I like the concept of that one though. Perhaps Blue (with a bit of green) and white. Black and white is too hard on the eyes, methinks.

Anything you do, it'll look great in the end.
