i use XP on my main desktop, it wouldnt run vista i am 99% sure. i use ME on my laptop cause i couldnt get XP to install properly, it works adequatly for my needs. if i ever get a new computer it MIGHT be a mac with OSX, i like the os but i dont like all the other crap (shovelware accessories stupid prices etc) honestly if i had the option i would get a new computer running Amiga OS4! yes it does exist and if they ever port it to x86 or standard PPC i would use it. as of yet it only works on select custom hardware which is not able to be found easily. bummer. (yes i am a HUGE amiga fanboy, deal with it
) it was so ahead of its time, came out in 86 and was lightyears ahead of the competition

Vista has gotten this reputation as a memory-guzzler. Maybe I'm the only one not stuck in the dark age with two gigabytes of RAM, so is it really a problem?
I, for one, am blowing my money on Ultimate within a week. I'm disappointed in some of you. Ben, are you not the one who said that graphics are not needed, but cannot hurt? Bic, are you not the one who boasted that quote in your signature for a week?
Hypocritical, but hell, I think we're used to that.
I love to hear everyone's insight on topics like these, but I think the comments could do with a little fairer fight. I've seen a lot of complaints, but just of the intentions of Microsoft over the unplanned downsides such as lack of support and the incapability to run some programs that are not supported by Vista due to the new debuggers (OllyDBG, for one).
Sorry, just had to get this all out there.
EDIT: Sorry Bic, I hadn't seen your second post referring to yet another one of Micro$ofts lame moves. They're doing a horrible job as far as any support goes.

I'm not ben, but my response to that is that graphics belong in graphic stuff like games where they do a lot of good, not operating systems where fancy graphics aren't needed and take up power that could be used for more useful stuff.Skyone wrote:are you not the one who said that graphics are not needed, but cannot hurt?
Maybe I'm being a little harsh but I'm entitled to my arrogent and biased opinion

OS X 10.8, huh? Any chance I could borrow that time machine (the most recent version of OS X is 10.4)?Harshboy wrote:You don't need a Mac to run OS X, OS X 10.8 runs perfectly on my Dellvskid wrote:I personally will likely never get Vista unless I have to. I don't think anyone is being a hypocrite. Good graphics don't hurt, but if all you get for buying Vista is good graphics and DRM, is that really worth it? Take Gears of War, for example. It has amazing graphics, but I wouldn't have spent $60 on it if there wasn't good gameplay to back it up. Buying something because it has good graphics alone is a waste of money, in my opinion, and probably the opinions of some others here, from what I've read. Also, if those good graphics mean my computer runs slower, or that I have to upgrade to get them, that doesn't seem worth it to me either.Skyone wrote:Vista has gotten this reputation as a memory-guzzler. That being said, I have no interest in Vista, at the moment. I'll stick with my PowerMac and OS X and my school laptop with XP. I don't feel like buying a new computer just to run a souped-up version of Microsoft's same old stuff.

Apple mac not be perfect but they sure do kick a$$ with mac osx. No 'security validation' no .dlls to get mixed up, no drivers, just works like a charm... hey look my iBook from 4 years ago still loads lepoard in under 40 seconds.... that pretty good hey? Try a windows computer that old with vista...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-2C2gb6ws8 Have a look here... macs run windows, mac and linux.. what more could anyone want?
Yer eight, vista is just more flashy stuff on an already overly upgraded version of eindows 2k. Half of the ' amazing new features' are either already in mac OSX, or got ditched to make the deadline. Vista is a scam from microsoft into making stupid people buy their stuff.Rebuilt from the ground up

However ive been out of the loop for a while so its more a mixture of apathy, aprehension and hearing bad things that is making me not upgrade

"Oh God, this is new so I hate it!"
Give me a break.
"It's slow-" New software tends to run more slowly than old software on identical hardware. Each consecutive version of Windows has required a more powerful system than the previous. The same applies to Mac OS.
"Bloated-" New software tends to take more space than old software. Each consecutive version of windows has required more hard drive space for the typical install. The same applies to Mac OS.
"It's full of DRM garbage-" Garbage? So, what, are businesses no longer allowed to protect their own digital products? High quality software is expensive, but theft skims away available funds. Without any kind of DRM we'd have nothing but pathetically buggy and poorly made software. What if you had a choice between starving and protecting what is rightfully yours?
"Treats every open port like an avenue for havoc...only allows microsoft certified whatevers-" Whenever a Mac VS Windows debate starts, what inveriably pops up? Everyone complains about the lack of security in Windows. We have been complaining about security for a long time. Now Microsoft is taking steps to address our complaints.
"The same ole thing in a new package-" OH MY GOD! Did anyone notice that a new version of THE SAME CAR comes out EVERY FREAKIN YEAR!? Seriously, folks. Get over it! Are all of you being held at gunpoint? I didn't think so.
Is Vista a god send? No, but neither is it the work of the devil. It is nowhere near as bad as all of you have convinced yourselves it is.

Heh, Vista still uses the same crappy NT core deep inside. just looks fancy. Os X is entirely different from Mac Os 9 or 7 or classic, built from the ground up. SUPPOSEDLY, the next incarnation of Windows uses a different core. Knowing the great M$, that won't come out until around 2014, or around the time service for Windows XP completely stops.
Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.
The thing I fear is DX 10 becoming Vista only and all the game makers switching, leaving me behind in the dust. I like Windows XP. I don't think it was time to upgrade yet, it wasn't needed. I am hoping that ReactOS will be finished before XP becomes obsolete. I am going to switch as soon as it hits 1.0. Maybe even in the beta stages.

A bunch or random comments to rnadom people in this thread:
@Rekarp: Me too, I can get Vista cheap, or possibly even free through my university. And I also had the luck of receiving an RC on behalf of a friend who's working for MS who put me on the list. Unfortunately none of my computers even made it through the installation.
@bicostp: I agree with lot of what you say. My favourite system right now is XPSP1, but I don't even use AV software. (But I do use a firewall)
@Triton: What I've heard about AOS4 is that even though it works and looks good, it's not really of much use. Besides, AmigaOne and Amiga OS 4.0 doesn't have much more to do with original Amigas except the name.
@teraflop122: About DRM: DRM essentially only hurts people who want to stay legal, because for example, they can't move their music to any portble device they want. Pirates will download music illegally or otherwise bypass DRM anyway, so they're not really affected.
@Indigno: I've been trying out ReactOS for some time, and I've come to the conclusion that it won't be a worthy replacement for Windows anytime soon. What it lacks is all the details, even though it's generally pretty compatible with non-demanding applications.

Well I just found out that I can get a copy of Vista for 90% off from my University
. I have to wait till March tho.
Hmm, I might want to grab my spare harddrive and install on that before putting it on my main computer.: Me too, I can get Vista cheap, or possibly even free through my university.
