Official case-building kits for the book?

Post by benheck »

I've got to make sure it's OK with my publisher (don't see why not but I have to check) but I am planning to have CNC case kits available when my book comes out. They could be ordered from this site. You'd still have to glue/screw the pieces together and apply the decals but this is covered in the book.

What I'll do is basically sub-contract Greeley signs to laser them for it and I'll do the rest. I should also include vinyl decals with the kits...

Haven't figured out the costs yet but I'm sure none of the kits would exceed $100. Probably more like $75-$80 (but don't quote me on that)

Thing is, with this the person suppling the kit (me/Greeley's) knows exactly what must be done, which eliminates the usual "setup/we're wasting time" charges that might occur were someone else to do it.

The reason I'm not using my own router is a) it's not setup yet and b) most of the book's projects require laser precision.

What do you all think of this? What about the price? I think this is a cool idea because it allows ANYONE to build any of the book's projects.

Thing is, this kit idea is NOT mentioned in the book. So it'd be up to this site to promote it (and possibly the book's site too)

This isn't a 100% done deal yet but please, discuss any thoughts below!

I'm onboard. I could really use one for one of my PSOnes. And I think there is a lot of people that would buy as we've talked about this before on the board.

that sounds like a great idea :D!!!!!! I'd probably buy the parts for a SNESp case, or maybe a PSp case.........anyway, I think you should definitely do it :)
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

sounds cool, though I dunno if I'd end up getting one (sure, it looks awesome, but some of the fun is making it yourself, no offense)

I would recommend trying to add a cd to your book that has all of the designs/blueprints/whatever you want to call them for those that do have access to a laser.

I'm not sure if I'd get one myself, but I think it's a pretty good idea.

I agree that it is a good idea. Heck (no pun intended) - it is a great one. The greatest hurdles for us laymen to building a professional looking portable is the case. I can tear apart portable tvs and ps one screens and wire them up to video game boards and batteries, but what I'm left with is a pile that looks like a mess. The alternatives for building a case easily are rather limited and amateurish looking (if you don't want to build a vacuum forming station). Franken-cases, project boxes, and plastic dollar store cases leave much to be desired. While the layered acrylic option looks like a good way to go, the pre-made CNC kits would be great.

I'm sure you can sell quite a few just to the people who currently frequent this forum, but once the book is out you will gain a serious growth in audience. You probably won't get rich selling the kits, but you will make enough to keep you in portablization supplies and beer for a while!

My book has no CD, just a website. I really didn't have enough to FILL a CD with.

Yeah, I'll be looking into this CNC stuff real soon. Too bad I don't have MY OWN laser engraver! I could put it right next to the toaster!
