Good AVI to MPEG4 converter?

I'm looking for a good avi to mpeg4 converter so I can shrink up some of these video files for my Jornada; however, all the programs I have now are shareware programs that only convert 50% of each video. Do you guys know of any LEGAL freeware programs for avi to mpeg4 conversion with a fairly good set of options available for it? Thanks!

I use my Sony (eww) Vegas program to do it. It does it 100%., I think you can get a 6-month demo somewhere.

VLC has options for converting audio and video to other formats. You need to do an Open File (NOT Quick Open File), check the box at the bottom that says Streaming/Saving, then hit options. In there, set everything the way you want (making sure to check the boxes for audio and video), and make sure you've specified an output for the file. Finally, click OK in that dialog, and the one below it, then wait for the file to play. When it's done, the output file should be complete.

If that fails, buy a program.

VLC will do the trick too, but programs like QuickTime or Windows Media Player won't run the file if the settings aren't perfect, but VLC will still run it without problems.

Well, it seems MediaCoder is getting the job done famously!

Although with all the videos I've converted so far, they've all had one teensy little problem; it seems whenever I convert a video (I'm not using any plugins by the way) it transcodes only the video file. From there, I went back to the converter and transcoded the audio file separately, but now I have an audio track (I think it's an mp3) and an mpeg4 video file with no audio. How do I combine the two?

You can mux it with NanDub.

Make sure you set up audio and video settings.

Does it still do that when you use one of the device modes? (iPod or PSP) I think the PSP wizard gives you an MPEG-4 file.

Thats what I used to do, one click conversion. You can set up multiple videos to convert while you are gone too.

I use Super for my video conversions. It supports a HUGE amount of video files, including .flv which is useful for ones downloaded off of Youtube.
