Help ?Intel Macbook or G4 Powerbook?

Post by Reploid Ayla »

So I've got one of these :?: situations.

Buying a small laptop as a decent to and through school portable. I am also picking up a inexpensive 'gaming' rig from craigs list for windows Nero, Servant Salamander, Adobe Audition fun. Maybe Ill bust out the Half-life 2 again...who knows?

But for the laptop I am set on an apple, and more specifically the Intel based Flamin Macbook or the Always loveable reliable :!: Apple Refurbished :!: PowerBook. The refurbished part does sound partially sketch, but I figure if I snag the 3 year protection plan than if something does happen to it they will most likely just replace it with a Macbook... I now understand that the Macbooks on average are the temperature of 75 c.

If any of you have experience with either and want to shed some light on the pros and cons I would love to read them. Thanks guys.

Definitely go with the Macbook. The Macbook heat issues are blown out of proportion, and the few "problems" have since been fixed. Not to mention, the Powerbooks ran hot too, so heat really shouldn't be an issue. Price shouldn't be an issue really because the Powerbooks are becoming less cost effective as they get older, and the Macbooks are only getting more and more powerful as time goes on. My last bit of advice would be to wait until after Macworld next week in the chance that Apple releases a speed bump or something even better!

Yeah go for the macbook. It's at least twice as fast.

Macbook all the way, unless there is a major price difference. Plus, you can run windows on them now. If you were to get a MacBook Pro, you might be able to ditch the gaming rig as well.. the Pro has a relatively decent graphics card on it, at least for a laptop. This is, of course, assuming that the gaming rig isn't super top of the line.

Im hearing you on the wait a week to see. If a small amount of time saves me from having to pour RC cola into the keyboard in a fit of rage because of too much thermal paste. Seriously 85 celcius is pretty ridiculous. For the gaming rig, for whatever reason there is a group of individuals in Portland who make a living off of selling inexpensive custom built turn-around computers. 800 max gets a puter that has a core 2 duo and some silly video card I wouldn't be able to appreciate. So that being said, I don't need a all in one solution, especially not a laptop. Carrying a rig like that is sketch. My biggest concern is battery life and a long life so I can use it as a basic media playing portable workstation. Though the more you talk about it, a Macbook might come in handy for that quick windows fix we all need...

Well I know all laptops get hot, I'd have to say any heat issues you might have are caused by you and not giving it enough air flow. An example is I have an HP with Athlon64 CPU, this puppy gets hot, and if I didn't have the back propped up to give space between the bottom and the desk the thing would have either melted or the whole system would have shut down several times after a few hours.

So keep good air flow for the bottom and you shouldn't have a problem. Take note you don't have to do this all the time. Just when you're running your system for hours on end.

If I had to tell you to go with a Mac laptop, the Macbook would be my suggestion. Intel has had built in limiters to keep the CPU from overheating and burning itself out since P4. That and the Macbook will be better with battery power then the G4 model laptops.
