You'll also find that the one with the extra port is older and made in japan, whereas the other is newer made in china. That likely means sony just wanted to manufacture them cheaper, so they started making them in china and nixed the port while they were at it to save a few bucks. The only things that used it were GameSharks and similar off-brand products, so sony, in their typical fashion, didnt care about screwing them over since after all, they werent making any money off of it.
Basically, Sony sucks.

WOW. you sir, are an intelectual.
Does this get in the way of making it portable (not that I'd use IT, i'd rather use a ps1)
And also I think your projects are awesome. you're awesome. you are greater than or equal to ben.
I especially like the NOAC in the GBO casing. That is pure genius. you need to show me how to do that as that was going to be one of my next projects (please note: copying someones work is the greatest complement of all)
EDIT: is that mcguyver(however you spell it)
in your avatar?

I've never seen a PSx that had av jacks on the back....maybe the one you got was rare. I got two, so the one with the scratch must DIIIIEEEE!!!!.....(as in use it for parts- cause I hate scratches)
Did you notice the excellent game selection in pic no.2?
that game is hard!
Or I could just make it portable with the screen inside the lid.

yeah that extra port can be used for imports, because i used ah gameshark-esque device to allow imports, yeah and also a spring to insert just below the cd cover hinge, it would press a sorta button (don't know why that's needed) well anyways it worked like a charm until my PS1 got mad at me and never wrked again...
that was like 6 or 7 years ago, and i still have the device

My 1996 model has that parallel port. Like others said, it was used for cheat devices and other things thta needed to interface with the PSX board. I think Sony removed it as a cost-cutting measure on a redesigned motherboard, and probably to stop the Gameshark from working.
It wasn't long until they released the Gameshark CDX, which they couldn't block if they wanted to.
Apparently it was also possible to use the PSX's parallel port to connect the console to your PC, so you can run pirated games and homebrew on it. However, the connection is only a couple hundred k per second (slow as crap). Don't quote me on this, I just read it somewhere quite a while ago.

actually i think it was that there was a plug in modchip made and since it wasnt really used for much anyway they took it oput to prevent piracy and like you i read that somewhere on the netbicostp wrote:My 1996 model has that parallel port. they are just one of the earlier models, from what ive read the original psx has become somewhat popular with audiophiles for having exelent sound quality (if left on for a period of days or something)

Just alittle bit of information: The button that the spring held down is cover's open sensor. If it isn't being pressed, the console shuts down.BloodNess wrote:yeah that extra port can be used for imports, because i used ah gameshark-esque device to allow imports, yeah and also a spring to insert just below the cd cover hinge, it would press a sorta button (don't know why that's needed) well anyways it worked like a charm until my PS1 got mad at me and never wrked again...that was like 6 or 7 years ago, and i still have the device
