The Story of the Earth RPG. Join the dev team now!

Post by XPCportables »

I am working on an RPG called The Story of the Earth. here you can see the title screen that I made pixel by pixel in MsPaint.
Image

After completing this picture I realized that this project is too massive for me to do on my own. I need the help of talented pixel artists to make sprites and tiles for this game. I would love to have any programmers aboard as well. I am using RPG toolkit 3 to build this game because I don't know a real computer language yet. If you already know a language like C++ I'm sure that you could pick up on RPG code quickly. I also need help with the Music and sound effects.

The Dev Team

XPCportables: Story writer/ head programmer/ head concept artist/ pixel artist.

Triton: Pixel artist

Please I need more help, please join the project!

The Story...

The gods prepared their armada and began to search for a new world. They were very intelligent beings. They advanced technologically over hundreds of thousands of years on their own world. But they did not realize that they were destroying their planet until it was too late. They set out on a journey to find a new world that would sustain them. After hundreds of years of searching space, they located a planet called earth. It was perfect, a flourishing planet with no intelligent beings inhabiting it.

They landed their armada there. But they quickly realized that the planet was not ready to sustain them. It lacked the vegetation and animal life that they required for survival. So the gods created a creature. They called it Human. It was an intelligent being, but it was a follower, not a leader. Designed to look to a higher power for guidance. This creature that they created was designed to cultivate the land, and prepare it for the return of the gods. The gods prepared their ships so that they could continue to search for a new world. They hoped that they might find a place that was ready to sustain them as soon as they arrived.

Before they left, they placed a pillar on the earth. It was a transmitter which the gods would use to transmit instructions to the humans. The transmitter also transmitted energy from the souls of the worshipers to the gods. That is how the gods stayed alive. They fed on the energy from the humans who worshiped them.

After thousands of years of worship and cultivation, Human nature began to set in. Humans are not good by nature. they are evil. Unlike other creatures, humans do not act on instinct, they are to intelligent for that. They operate on a logic system. This is something that the gods did not realize when they created the humans. The freewill of the Humans caused many to rebel against the god's orders.

War broke out among the humans. They formed groups and nations and the cultivation of the land ceased. Smaller and smaller factions of the humans still worshiped the gods, and communication from the gods ceased. Many still believed in the gods, but the gods did not have enough energy to communicate with the humans. They gave up the search for a new world and began the return journey to the Earth

The humans advance technologically, they discover that the earth is round. A group of people weary of the wars, decide to search the ocean for a new land, one without war and suffering. They build flying ships to travel the world.

This is where the player begins his journey.

The protagonist's name is Jax. A boy in the age range of 16-18 yrs old (I haven't decided yet) He lives with the group who is trying to find a new land. The story begins with Jax living in his village, hanging out with his friends and helping to build the airships. Jax has a girlfriend named Aurora. You as Jax will do various things around the village, such as fight bullys that are picking on kids, help people with chores, and hunt in the woods. You will also help the workers build the airship and prepare for the journey.

When the airship is finished, you will depart from that land in search of a new home. The airship finds new land. The captain decides to sail over the land and scope out a good place to begin construction of the new town. In the distance a crew mate spots something large and unnatural. It is a massive gleaming metal object. It is stuck in the ground as if it fell from the sky. The captain decides to sail towards it to see what it is. the ship begins to lose altitude as it nears the metal object. Then the ship is pulled down to the earth crashing into the dirt like it was just powered down. But the engines were not shut off, there was no explainable reason why they had crashed. It was as if the hand of god had ripped them from the sky...

This is all of the story that I will disclose to the general public. Please get involved, you can help shape this story up refine it and polish it.

I hope that this introduction got you guys hooked. If you are interested in working on the project please do. I could use all of the help I can get. Those who join the development team can help me develop and refine the story.

Hint: make your game run in 320x240 instead of 640x480 ;)
That's 1/4 pixels that need to be drawn. (It'll look like a SNES game too)

Another hint: If you're running XP Service Pack 2 or better, go get Paint.NET, it's MUCH better than crummy old MS Paint, and easier to use than The GiMP. :)

If you ever finish it tell me, it looks like it might be good.

:D You could try to get it ported to gp2x.

There is some "Game Maker" thing that can be brought that can compile to GP2x native code. However, if he wanted it ported to GP2x, he'd probably have to learn C(++) and SDL, or even Fenix, if it was upto the task, to port it.

Thanks for the advice. I really need help producing it though. here is a sample of my sprite work. here is the protagonist Jax

I like the way that this one turned out, but it took a half hour to make it. I had to make it perfect. I will be hand making all of my tiles, just me alone, this project will be impossible. Especially because I am new at this whole pixel by pixel tile making thing. They are 32,32 pixel tiles by the way.

I'll give a little bit more story.

Then the ship is pulled down to the earth crashing into the dirt like it was just powered down. But the engines were not shut off, there was no explainable reason why they had crashed. It was as if the hand of god had ripped them from the sky...

That's all you get for now. I do hope that you guys will help me, I really want this story to become a real game.

Well my plan was to draw out concepts for world and character design, scan them into my computer and email them to everybody on the team, then we could, together turn these drawings into tiles and sprites. I also would like people to help me develop the story and characters. I only want to do that in private conversations though, so I need to know if anybody is committed or even interested. I would love to have the team's input on the story and designs.

im interested but i am not that great of a pixel artist, its good that you would come up with the concept art yourself, it lends to more consistand design in the long run

It's ok if you're not a great pixel artist. I am not very good either, but a couple of fair pixel artists is better than 1.

The character sprites will now be 32, 64 pixel sprites. 32,32 were too constricting.

I might be interested. Give me some simple stuff to draw and I'll see how it turns out. I'm good at objects rather then persons but I can do them too nevertheless.
