Another broken screen...

Post by TNT »

Hello everyone, I too am making a portable PSone, and I just bought a used screen from EB games. They claimed it was guaranteed to work. Bull. When I tested it, the screen had a bunch of white horizontal lines going through it. When I tap it, it seems to get better sometimes, or worse. My guess is that it's just a loose wire, so I'll open it up and check it out. Oh, and I got another quick question. Do you know of any good materials to use to make the case? Something that looks good, and preferably can be cut with a utility knife. Vacuum forming may be a possiblity in the future, but I want to keep it simple for the first handheld I'm making.

Tell us how it turns out opening the screen and fixing the problem.

As for cases, you can go and buy a project box from radioshack. If you really want to build one thin pieces of wood, plastic or use the exsisting console case to make one.

Ok, thank you.

As for a plastic case, do you think I could get the right type of plastic from maybe a hobby shop?

EDIT: Ok, I just found something strange out. I took it apart and everything (I didn't find any problems) but the screen was still messed up. I turned the volume up all the way, and when the explosions and other sounds in the game happens, the screen got a little better. Also when the laser inside the actual PSone moved, the screen got better also. Do you think it has something to do with the power?

Probable just vibrations from the console and speakers shaking a loose wire on and off.

I held the speakers still, and I don't think the vibrations would go through the wire. It also happened when the laser moved in the system.

Problem fixed! I bought a new screen... It's a game screen made by "Intec" It's pretty big, but I'm sure there's is a lot of features I can take out of it, (EG. The car adaptor and whatnot...).

EDIT: Ok, I tested this one, and the screen works. But, now the sound has a very loud static sound canceling out the real games sound... But I guess I'll fix it when I open it up to portablize it. (PS: This is the exact opposite of my other screen (sound worked, screen didn't))

It's actually made for the PSone, and it runs on 7.5 volts if that clears things up a bit. And I looked for a official PSone screen, and couldn't find one cheap enough, so I got this one. And anyway, the broken one before WAS an official one, so yeah.

EDIT: It has two sets of speakers. I unplugged one of the sets, and the other one worked fine, but the screen wouldn't come on with them unplugged. Can I short these out or something?

EDIT (2): Nevermind. I fixed it.

Ah!!! This is really getting on my nerves!

Ok, so, I got the PSone itself to run on batteries. No problem. But I took apart the screen and everything, and when I plug the battery into it, the imprinted wires start glowin red and explode. But this is just on the board with the power plugin thingy. Do you think I plugged some of the wires into the wrong ports or something?

Edit: Oh yeah, I've resoldered some of the shorts already. The screen appears to turn on until the wires melt. And it's only the thin parts that short out...
