Gameshark CDX + Homebrew = :D ?

Post by bicostp »

Quick question:

Can I use the Gameshark CDX to boot homebrew PSX games off regular CD-Rs on an unmodified PSX/PSone? (By "unmodified" I mean it has no modchips or anything.)

Thanks!

Yes, yes you can

Here's how to do it:

Step 1:

You'll need to keep the cd drive spinning with the lid up (blu-tac works fine, as does tape and superglue) by blocking the door sensor. If you have the original PS-X (the big one), the drive door sensor is in the upper right-hand corner. If you have the PSone (the little one), the sensor is in the lower right-hand corner.

Step 2:

Once you have accomplished this, insert your Gameshark CDX and boot your PSone.

Step 3:

After GS loads up, there will be a brief moment where the disc will stop spinning; swap CD now (be quick about it!)

Step 4:

Select 'Start Game' and 'Without Codes' and hit the 'X' button until the screen goes black..your backup should now boot. Enjoy!! ^_^

Do I have to swap discs in that brief period, or can I swap them after selecting "Start Game -> Without Codes"? (I'd like to be able to do this at my leisure with a portable)

actually, technically, that technique would work with almost ANY game... It's the swap trick, I used it with those edumacational ps1's you got loaned from the school back in 5th grade. My little brother had one, I had a CDR and some iso copys I made with my friends games... Good times.
Really, you want to know if you can just use it like the freeloader for GCN. I think?
Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.

Yeah, anytime will work, too.

yeah totokan, I used to do that too, you just wait till it gets to the PS logo screen then quickly swap them out, works every time.

You guys should consider just getting a mod chip. They are so cheap these days, and im sure most of you have the technical ability to install one. It just saves so much hassle, not to mention strain on the drive.

a lot of the mod chip prices dropped down to like 20-30 dollars plus shipping. Even better...they are small so its easy to keep your portable small.
