My favorite will always be Evangelion, Shattered my mind all those years ago.

Recent good series if you wanna check it out would be The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, which i loved, but recently awaiting each episode of Welcome to the N.H.K Which brings to mind Genshiken as well.

Too many good series out there, if that sorta thing floats your boat, i tend not to get into the million episode series (bleach, naruto, Full Metal Alchemist) as they dont really have a point to them, just the same stuff over and over, no real development. Have a story and tell it is the way i like em.

"Japanese Anime" is kind of redundant. Dontcha think. I just call it Anime.

My favorite so far is Cowboy Bebop. I love the dark existential feel to it. Not only does it kick ass and take names, it gets you thinking too. Great characters, great plot, nice sub-plots. The movie is something to behold as well.

Other favorites of mine include: Akira (close 2nd to Bebop), Fist of the Northstar, Great Teacher Onizuka, Outlaw Star, Wicked City, Ghost in the Shell.

When everyone says Ghost in the Shell, are they talking about the movie or the series? The series is pretty good so far... Personally, I liked Ghost in the Shell 2 more than the first movie. Just better all around...

Japanese Cartoons from Japan. Sounds like something TV guide Chanel would come up with.

I don't mind watching it so long as the subject matter of the series/movie interests me. Just like any other TV show. I guess you can't consider me a serious fan since I don't watch Anime to watch Anime, I watch Anime to watch TV. If that makes any sense. OK I admit it, I did get a DVD recorder just to archive the Fullemtal Alchemist episodes that I have on VHS from the Adult Swim run.

Oh wow... I have so many "favorites." :P I'll make this post quick.

A really good one is "Genshiken." (As usual, watch the Japanese version.) It's an anime about an anime club... which I watched in the anime club I'm a part of. Anyway, I gotta go, but check it out. It's only like... 12 episodes or something.

OlduvaiHand wrote:I kind of prefer darker or more emotionally challenging productions: Akira and Ghost in the Shell are pensive yet animalistic, but there're lots of other greats projects in a similar vein, like Perfect Blue, Now and Then, Here and There, Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain (arguably the best show to explore the blurring of technology and humanity in the digital age), and Infinite Ryvius (think Lost in Space meets Lord of the Flies).

One production aspect that attracts me more than anything else is attention to detail on the part of the technology designers. The reality of a show is completely violated if the little details are mismatched. For an example of what I'm talking about, check out Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise. It's one of my favorite movies, and even though most everything is familiar in function, little things, like spoons or engine design, are just different enough to give it an existence independent of our own. Planetes is similarly detailed and well thought out, and is a great story to boot.

Lastly, I've had a rule since seriously getting into anime about 5 years ago: If the show goes for more than 2 seasons it had better be really good, and if it tops 100 episodes, it probably really sucks. With few exceptions, I've been proven right. The deal is that once the production team gets to the point where they either plan on or feel they can extend the show indefinetly, they lose the desire for exposition in a timely fashion and give you nothing but filler. There's a reason things like Dragon Ball Z have enter episodes filled with nothing but grunting played over virtually still frames -- it's because there's no quality behind it.
You seem to be, like me, a philosopher of sorts of anime and Japanese works; not accepting fanboy fodder as anything more than what it is, fanboy fodder. May I suggest that you give Fullmetal Alchemist a try? It has an amazing story once it picks up, and after that, every episode is simply breathtaking; the whole thing presents so many religious, militaristic, and sectarian values and philosophies it's such a treat to watch. The evolution and character structure is very good, too; the main characters do a lot of growing, and there is no defined good or evil. Only ambition. Give it a try!

*nods head back and forth and side to side* Yeah, I agree with CTFan. FMA is awesomely amazing in several aspects. You'll like it.

I haven't actually finished the series, though. They took it off Adult Swim, and I don't have the hard drive space to torrent it at the moment... I'm still wondering why I decided to go with 80GB for my second hard drive for $60 when I could have gotten a 250GB one for $90. :?

You guys are forgetting about Dragonball Z, which is the only anime series I ever watched. I loved it though. :D
