Trying to turn a NES controller into an MP3 player.....

Post by Harsky »

I know this isn't an original project and it was already done before but when I try and find instructions to make it, I seem to come up with nothing apart from the same thing over and over again. Even then I thought I'd still give it a go. I have an old NES controller and soon I'll be getting on those those generic USB MP3 player but my big question is... how do I connect it so that the buttons I press on the NES controller will also make the MP3 work ie, direction pad up = volume up, start button = play/pause etc. I know you could solder onto the trace but I have no idea which one to solder onto. Thanks in advance.

First of all, you'll probably have to gut the NES controller to make room for the MP3 player, meaning you'd take out the NES controller PCB. If I were you, I'd just throw some tact switches in there instead and mount them behind the existing NES buttons.

Good luck!

Well, I bought the MP3 player. Quite cheap from where I bought it. I gutted it and the innards are still working. Anyways, the buttons on the sides which operate the stuff like play, forward etc look like this:

They're the ones with the black buttons. Is there a way to connect them to the tract switches? Also, the headphone jack is at an awkward position. Is it possible to solder them off and then add wires to them so i can redirect it to somewhere else?
