I do know that the FDS works with the NeoFami (at least to some extent) because one was playing SMB2 at a store in Osaka a few weeks back. That wouldn't test the extra sound channels though. And I don't have the USA Castlevania 3 with me (The website does say Akumajo Densetsu works... if you don't press reset) :?

I have an FDS RAM Adapter but I'm sure my FDS unit is broken so I can't test with the Famikonyarou. I'd guess that the NeoFami and the Famikonyarou are gonna have similar compatibility though.

Akumajou Densetsu uses a different and technologically inferior chip. But the compatibilty page does say it runs "Just bleeding" (a translation.) This could very well be the Enix game Just Breed, which used the same MMC5 chip to a greater extent that Castlevania III used.

In my opinion, Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Disk System actually does use the Disk System's extra sound channels, but only when Mario rescues the real Princess Peach. However, if the Neo Fami won't output the extra sound of one chip, it won't do so for the Disk System. Its compatibility page leads me to believe this to be true.

The only game the compatibility page says is with incorrect sound is Megami Tensei II (which I have, so I can test on the Famikonyarou at least). I also have Just Breed (which is on the compatibility list as OK as you said-I read Japanese) so I can test that too :) Sadly they're over at my girlfriend's place right now (but she has a Famikonyarou too so she can test them). I'll get back to you on that.

Edit: According to her, they both work fine, and with sound. So it could be that the Famikonyarou does have the sound channels hooked up and the NeoFami doesn't? Then again, it's possible that the bad sound in Megami Tensei II isn't very noticeable. I'd have to know a point where it's obvious and check it. When I have a chance (and the proper tools) I'll build the PC-RAM Adapter... adapter and upload some games through the RAM adapter of the FDS and check for compatibility/sound that way. In any case, the Famikonyarou seems to be the same thing pretty much as the one that they're selling in the first post in this thread, except it has a 7-in-1 cart soldered into it.

I don't know if any aren't glop-tops, but they aren't all manufactured directly on the main board. Kevin Horton's page about the Portendo's NOAC shows one that isn't (from a Tri-Star/Super 8).
There is also a chip called NT6578 (I'm not sure if it's the same as the Tri-Star one, some claim it is) that is an NOAC. (Edit: Apparently this chip is made by NovaTek.)
Sorry I can't help beyond that.

The absence of the extra sound in Megami Tensei II is very noticeable. The title screen is almost silent without it. This Famikonyarou may be worthy of attention. If Just Breed will work then just about anything should.

Cool. Well, I think the NOACs they're selling on the page mentioned above seem really similar to the insides of the Famikonyarou, so I might pick some up and see if they're good stuff too. I'll probably go over to my girlfriend's later on today and see what I can find out about those two carts too. I might just bring them back since I think she's playing one of the Final Fantasy games now anyway.

Here's a bit more info on the NOACs.
I found another one (might be the same as the NT6578) called the SH6578F. The manufacturer website is http://www.ntkhk.com.hk/ and they still have info up on their site about it (might be able to get some?) It looks to be a really interesting beast. Apparently it supports various other devices too (like keyboards, mice and printers- it's supposed to be usable for making PCs of some sort as well as pirate Famicoms?)
The Game Axe uses one called UM6582 (also called NMOS 6582 by some people). I couldn't find much of anything about that.

What about the atari flashback :!: Its still a glop top, but it has pin header type things. It could easily be desoldered. Also, the rom with all the crappy games is on its own board too.

Hmm....is the Atari Flashback a normal NOAC, or a modified one that can't be modded?
Warranty-Voiding fun!

It's probably a regular NOAC... I wouldn't see them making a new chip for it if they went and used that as opposed to a regular Atari :/
