There's already a Sonic The Hedgehog movie (I own it on DVD), so that's already out of the question...

I was going to suggest The Secret of Monkey Island, but that would never work with the whole Pirates of the Carribean thing going on. Too bad too, this probably could be made on a small budget.
I actually have part of a story worked out for a metroid movie, but knowing me I doubt anyone else would actually like it. Besides which its already taken.
The Earthbound idea isn't bad. You wouldn't be tempted to fall into the trap of taking yourself too seriously. Would be really hard to pull off though.
Theres Guardian Heroes. I know you said you didn't like the medival stuff, but it also has robots with giant lasers and Super Zur! Also, a super kung-fu bunny rabit.

Oh man, it just came to me in one of those "DUH!" moments:
Duke Nukem: Dukepocalypse
It practically writes itself. And you could intentionally make it as campy as hell because that would be true to the game! Duke (as played by Bruce Campbell, of course) could just run around blowing stuff up and shouting stolen catch phrases the whole time.

Earthbound was a pretty sweet game, but it's no match for Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III in the SNES RPG category. By the way, does anyone know when Mother III is coming to America?Did someone mention a Shenmue movie? (I think it was G2.) I thought they already made one and packaged it with Shenmue II?

RPG's are most suited for movie's though a game like Half Life might make a good movie too. A Zelda movie would rock but it would have to be like LOTR or something. You know: costs a lot, takes a lot of work, has a great cast and crew, etc. Which is quite hard to imagine for a video game movie, people don't take videogames scripts seriously in Hollywood.
If they ever make a Zelda movie with real life actors it would sell. A CG movie just doesn't seem to be able to attract the whole audience.
