help
Ok, My moms boyfriend loves Diablo II, he has been playing it every day for the past few years online. The thing is we have DSL and only one DSL modem, and he plays for hours upon hours on end so i cant get the modem. I have sugestted that we get a router that way we can share the connection, but he wont shell out the money for one couse he said sense my computer is older than his i will give him a virus, just couse im 2000 and not XP.
How can i convicnce him to get the router?

Re: help
Remind him the essentially, XP is just a 2000 base with a updated GUI. If you have all the updates, its fine. Also as long as you don't enable sharing between the two computers, there is no way just sharing the internet connection will get him a virus. In fact most routers have a setting that makes all the connected devices invisible to each other. Also tell him that routers with hardware firewalls are pretty much hacker proof compared to a crapola DSL modem.gamer2 wrote:Ok, My moms boyfriend loves Diablo II, he has been playing it every day for the past few years online. Ok first tell the "genious" that unless you network the computers together, and a file it moved over to his computer and run a virus getting on his computer is pretty impossible.
Then you go online when he's not playing Diablo and look at sites like BestBuy, Circuit City, Compusa, MicroCenter, and look for the prices of a router or switch (switch just handles IP traffic doesn't filter in/out communication). I've seen some routers for about $30 and switches should be as much as $10 cheaper (equivilant number of RJ-45 ports).
After you resent this information to him you tell him to make a choice. If he still says no, do what your avatar is doing. You've done all the work for him and all he has to do is make a choice after all your research.
Good luck.

I am a geek.
You can get 'em $20 off newegg.
There are also some DIY routers, but those probably take more money than buying one does.

You know how to make better titles than this. "help", "May I ask?", and "what a predicament" tell us absolutely NOTHING about the post inside. Give us at least some kind of hint as to what is inside.
