toploading NES portable?
Has anyone made a portable out of the toploading nes? I know it's a rare unit and all, but it would be smaller than the original nes. Anyone?

I've been wondering that, but it'd be kinda pointless.nickerous wrote:Has anyone made a portable out of the toploading nes? I know it's a rare unit and all, but it would be smaller than the original nes. Anyone?
This size issue is solved by NOACs, which are far less rare than top-loaders, and the original NES board isn't too big, especially when you consider how big your portable has to be in order to accomodate the huge carts.
Besides, I doubt you'll find anyone crazy enough to cut up their top-loader.

Plus, the top-loader has a flaw. It is missing a capacitor that results in the decreases the video quality. Lines appear on the top-loading NES's display.jaytee wrote:I've been wondering that, but it'd be kinda pointless.nickerous wrote:Has anyone made a portable out of the toploading nes? They're hardly noticable. And it's nothing compared to the zero-entry-force crappy 72-pin connector flaw in the NES1.MM007 wrote:Plus, the top-loader has a flaw. It is missing a capacitor that results in the decreases the video quality. Lines appear on the top-loading NES's display.
But now that you bring it up, would it be possible to add that capacitor somehow? I probably wouldn't anyway, as I'm one of those sane people that wouldn't ever tear apart their top-loader, but it'd be good to know (in case I like see one at a garage sale and don't feel like selling it for a profit).

That same flaw is present on some NOAC designs too (for example, the Tri-Star adapter for the SNES). I added the cap to my Tri-Star and the graphics look much improved, though there are still some lines in the graphics (I think that's probably just bound to happen).
But apparently that method doesn't seem to work on the top-loading NES...
See here for an explanation. It appears this site has a composite video out mod but someone claims it doesn't do anything for the bars. I'm afraid that pretty much everyone is stumped, but it's probably simply an issue of the top-loading NES being made cheaply.

Sorry for reviving this thread, but I plan on geting a NES Top Loader, but as I can see some people say that Top Loaders are really great and other ones say that they h ave some flaws (as said on this thread), so what do you think about it?
And about the price of the Top Loader, that's no problem at all.
Also about those "flaws", are they easy to correct?

I'm all alone, dealing with my broken heart. Why I have feelings if they feel so bad. All seems so dark, will I ever see light?

in my experience, they may be a little hard to get started (not as bad as the toaster) but once they go, it's just fine. Then again, I haven't cleaned my games in years, so that is probably the worst case scenario. Ooh, I should mention that there are some lines on the screen, but I heard that a capacitor would fix it.

So they take some time to start the games?
Also the lines you're telling are easily noticeable on the screen?, and does they look worse than the original NES's signal?
And finally, you said a capacitor would fix the lines problem, but it fixes it completely or just make a little improvement?
Thanks in advance.

heh, I just realized this is the thread I learned about the capacitor in. It's about as bad as the original using RF without it, and I'm assuming it's better with it, though I have not tried it. As for the games taking time to load, they may (depending on how clean they are) but it's not as long as the original NES.
