Help me. Please, help me. Chrono Trigger CAN'T die!

Guys, I've snapped. Laying in bed through a sleepless night, I finally reached the boiling point. As some of you may know, a project known as Chrono Resurrection began at the dawn of the new millenium. (there was another, but Resurrection was MUCH farther ahead) It's purpose: To bring a 3D Chrono Trigger to the world, for free as a fan-made project. However, those bastards over at Square-Enix terminated the project, issuing a Cease and Desist letter. I accepted it as an inevitability; until now. I don't exactly know what happened, but I think I've finally began to realize that the Chrono series is a dying breed; not in fan luster, but developer activity. I've waited long enough, and now I want to do something. Problem is, I have no clue what. Petitions never work, I doubt that anyone could legally take on Square, and the years of letters sent in by myself, other fans, and possibly yourselves have had absolutely no effect. I thought of taking on a similar project myself, but my team is small and.....inexperienced, to say the least. So you MUST understand. I HAVE to do something to help out the Resurrection effort. Any ideas?

Well in many countries its legal to use a previous game as inspiration. You would need to make sure its sufficiently different. However, they could still take you to court and bankrupt you with court charges, Known as the MicroSoft Technique

Get a gang of petitioners and go protest outside SE's main head quaters

Or pursuade them to make an official commercial one, or to let them use your commercially. Sure, it woulndt be free but at least it would exist!

If you're intrested in something YOU could do, i suggest you make it.
For a measly $100, you can purchase a lisence to use Torque, a professional level gaming engine (and probably what CT: R was using).
Just keep everything quiet until the game is ready, then one day just release it. What better way to help the effort than to be the creator of the game?
On a similar note, you could talk to the CT: R people and ask for their source. Im sure they'll give it to you.

Umm...ok. Chrono Resurrection was an infringement on the intellectual property of Square Enix, so how does that make them bastards? If I defend my own work, does that make me a bastard as well?

Personally, I loved Chrono Trigger. I never had the honor of playing it on an actual Snes, but I did use emulators and a PS2 at one time or another. The thing is...it hasn't gone anywhere. You can still pop in a Chrono Trigger cart/DVD/ROM and play the entire game.

I HAVE to do something to help out the Resurrection effort.

If Chrono Resurrection was given a cease and desist order, there is nothing you can do. You could take it back to court, but you'd get the same answer! They were stealing the property of Square-Enix, and told to stop. That's all there is.

What else can you do? I don't know, you could write fan fiction, you could write a novel losely based on CT, you could get into the video game industry, get stock in Square-Enix and try to sway the balance of control there, find another hobby- build little robots, collect LEGO sets, program for the GP2X, get some pet rats/gerbils/hamsters- anything to give you something to do on a daily basis. Get into other games, like Simcity, Civ, Rise of Legends, games which last forever. Get into a community based on any of those games. You could try to make your own RPG...

man, i really wish i could help, though i (sadly) have never played chrono games, or have next to 0 knowledge on anything.

You could always email Square about it, if you can get up to their headquarters. If you get permission then you can form a team, but it's pretty hard.

Try to get the copyright laws in your country changes to a smaller period of time. Many countries that have copyright laws have absurdly long terms for the copyright. Try to get it lowered to something like 20 years and then wait for the copyright to run out.

I still say just buy the liscence and make it. It doesnt take too much knowledge, so anyone could make one. It's got 3d rendering and everything, just like what CT: R was using. Just make the game, then release it. Their mistake was having a website with clips and whatnot. Just make it and release it silently.

Yeah, I know you said petitions never work, but this isn't some crappy internet petition. They ask you to print it out, sign it physically and send it off. Then again, you've probably already signed itâ€¦

Beyond that, I have nothing. As much as I like Chrono Trigger, if the people who made it have something against it (and have a good reason), they have the right to stop the project.

I was also thinking about doing this; however, you'd also have to buy the rights from Square on all of their music, which is somewhere around $10,000 for a commercial release. As much as I want to see the project live, that's stealing; although Chrono Trigger stole music too... Oh well. I've got some "other" RPG programming interests at this time anyways

As for all of you siding with Square, I agree; they put together a fabulous team, worked for years, and delivered an amazing game worth protecting. It's not really the termination of the project that gets me; it's a culmination of everything Square has done to Chrono fans over the past few years; Brake's cancellation, nothing at E3 for years, not as much as a last look as they speed on by the by-gone era of SNES RPGs.

After going outside and thinking (ok, I was mowing the lawn, but same thing for me), I have some possible theories about why SE may have sent the C&D letter to CT:R. Some are less serious than others, and some aren't very good reasons. Keep in mind that I'm trying to list all possible reasons within the limits of my mindâ€¦

1. They're evil.

Unlikely, but if you think about it, a letter or e-mail costs them almost nothing and has the potential to bring money to them if someone is stupid enough to take them to court. Plus, remember that Square Enix probably doesn't have the same motives as Square did by themselves.

2. They're planning a CT remake themselves.

No one said they couldn't lie in the C&D letter! Still unlikely thoughâ€¦

3. They want you to play a game that brings them money.

They don't get money for CT anymore, but they do get money if you buy one of their current RPGs instead of making one yourself. Normally they can't eliminate competition, but since the rights of most of CT:R belong to them, a C&D letter takes care of that.

4. They're planning to release CT for the Wii's virtual console.

Hey, it could happen, and the timing fits too. This is supported by the one above, since they would be getting money for previous work instead of it being free to you.

5. They think it's disrespectful to the original game.

I've heard it happening with other remake projects where petitions are made to stop the project. It's usually not the game company that has this view (at least not publicly), but it happens.

6. Remakes of things are often frowned uponâ€¦

â€¦if the remake is not as good as the original. Critics attack it more in these cases than when it is a new game that didn't work out.

That's all I can think of right now.

Hah! now I know why that Robo theme sounds so familiar

I love Chrono Trigger but I can't efford the real deal, so you can probably guess how I'm playing it

. Though I WANT the real game it is just to darn expensive (I don't want the cart only or a Japanese version).
I've said it a thousand times: imagine what Chrono Trigger would look like on Gamecube but they never made it... I wouldn't even mind if they made another 2D game in the chrono series, but not some "Chrono Cross sorta version". I would even buy it if they made it for PS3! (or maybe not cause I don't have the money to buy a PS3) I don't understand why Square refuses to make another Chrono game

I mean:
-they would make millions
-have lots of old fans come back
-increase their quality of games even more
so why not?
Yeah that's it, let's all send letters to Square asking why not?

Just get the #^$% over it!!!!
I mean seriously, the game is gone they aren't going to make any more, move on and find another game series to get obsessed about.
