New guy with a problem

Post by redruM_0381 »

Hi, Im new here.
I was hunting through this forum for a problem I'm having, and see that other people also have this issue. But from what I found, nobody has a solution.

I have 2 different superjoy NOAC's. Both have 13 pins instead of 12. Its all wired up correctly, and works. However, Player 1's controls are erratic after a few minutes of use. At first it works fine, but after a few minutes, Right and A begin to pause the game, and right is acting like its being held down.

This isnt a wiring or soldering issue. It does it on BOTH of my NOAC's, and I have tried 2 different genuine NES controllers.

I have also tried adding a 100ohm resister between the clock and +5v line, like the superjoy controller has.
Also tried lowering the resistance on the 8 resistors on the controllers from 30k, down to 8k. Still no go.

HELP!!! Im ripping my hair out on this one!! :x

Is this how you have it wired?

2=white
5=brown
9=orange
10=yellow
12=red

That's from the top of the NOAC (cartridge facing up and on your left, looking down) pin 1 being at the bottom, and pin 13 at the top.

Yes, this is how it is wired. Keep in mind also, that the controls work fine for a little while then it starts getting erratic.

A side note.. I am using a nicely filtered +5v PSU. Tested with meter to make sure it is the correct voltage, it is reading 5.06v

Nothing is overheating. All parts are cool. but it ACTS like something is getting hot. If I unplug it, and leave it for a few minutes, then it is OK again.

Perhaps you should try wiring in an NOAC controller that came with it? Some clones just HATE the actual NES controller for some reason or another, but they may take kindly to the usually Genesis knockoff controller they provide you with. Just a thought.

Possibly. Im going to try the original powerjoy controller tommorow to see if it acts normal. If so, I suppose I can just rewire the glob onto the NES controller to replace the NES controller chip. Thats a pain in the ass though.. The project I am doing requires the original NES controller.

I am also suspicious of the electrolytic caps on the NOACs. anybody ever have issues with these? Do we know their function? They are probably filter caps, and if bad, could be not filtering the RF from the controller well enough?

I would not worry about the caps. They are most likely filters, and are cheap to replace if they wear out. Just rewire them on longer leads if you want them out of the way. Thats what I do. Or you would look at radioshack for another cap that is the same type but a smaller package, that might work ok for saving space. If the caps are for filtering you ost likely do NOT want to remove them, as the video quality will most likely get horrible.

I solved my problem with this. I still had the powerjoy controller connected in line with the NES controller. I snipped the poweryjoy controller, and now it works fine.

So thats my problem solved. but now I broke the ribbon cable connecting the LCD module to the LCD controller. So I need to find a new LCD unit. Preferrably one of the intec screen pads that were for sale on Amazon a few weeks ago. Because I already have the hole cut for that screen ion the case.

If anybody knows where to get one of those screens, PM me.

Very interesting. So just to verify, you cut up the powerjoy controller so only the glob remains, and wired it in parallel with the NES controller?

Hmmm

I cut the powerjoy controller off. Or snipped the data and latch wires that connect the PJ controller to the PJ. SO I only had one circuit board, the one with the NOAC, when I was done. Then I ran the wires(orange,yellow, white, etc..) to the NOAC from an original NES controller and soldered into their corresponding points the the NOAC board.

I'll try to take some pictures and show you.

Wait, did you take an NES chip and directly solder that to the switches? That's a no-no, for it'll work, but the signal then gets interfered, you need a resistor to help secure it.

Wait, that's a no-no!? What about all the pinouts showing the controller and video stuff being soldered to the pins?

Do I know what I'm talking about?

Geebs61:
I re-read your posts, and I think I see what you are saying... you had trouble when you had both the powerjoy AND NES controller connected simultaneously. You cut off the powerjoy, and now the NES controller is fine.

If this is the case, my issue is different. I dont have the powerjoy controller connected, just the NES controller, and I have issues after a few minutes of playing.

You are correct, that was my exact problem. I have no idea what could be causing yours. Sorry.
