i could buy plastic (a good type) but how would i cut it?
i need to know a tool i can use to cut plastic and what a good material to use is.
Dont suggest franken casing as i plan on doing that to my n64 portable (it will be the second or third one i try) This one will be a snes portable.

scherubino (sp?) I know has constructed a CNC machine, so if you send him CAD-drawn plans I know he can custom cut the plates for about $25...check out this thread: http://benheck.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=10989

KID: Whats that?
Me: its a handheld i built using a Super Nintendo
KID: shuttup you didnt make that.
Me: yea i did and if you dont believe me then you can try and find a portable that looks exactly like this that you can BUY off of the internet.

If I weren't leaving high school next week to go off to college JarJar, i'd probably do that too. BTW, that plastic was a steal (eHobbies had 3 sheets for $20, psh you can guess how fast i cancelled that order lol).
EDIT: Minkster, how long have you been waiting for your plastic? I ordered UPS Ground and i am an impatient little biotch too when it comes to recieving stuff.

2) Slap him again.
3) Go buy him a Creative Zen or something.

Heh, yeah I know what ya mean. I ordered mine Friday, June 2nd. So I've been waiting 10 days now. The only reason why I want it quick is because I'm going on vacation for 6 days on the 16th, and I don't want it delivered to my house if I'm not in itXFactor wrote:If I weren't leaving high school next week to go off to college JarJar, i'd probably do that too. Yeah, I did like an hour ago. My former just needs to have supports put in (under the cookie sheet so when it sucks, the sheet doesn't bow) and just a little caulk around the edges to seal it off. That shouldn't take more than an hour with a rotary tool. By next weekend, I should be able to start designing my mold (if i can confirm the damn plastic will come soon thereafter).minkster wrote:Heh, yeah I know what ya mean. Thats cool, my former is the one followed by studio creations. Its not really a proffesionally made one, but it will do the job. Does yours have a grill built in or anything snazzy like that?
For mine I'm just using the oven and transferring it over to the vacuum former to have the plastic sucked down to the mold.
EDIT: So your making a mold too? If you try making it out of plaster, if you can find anything harder than plaster of paris to make a cast, I would recommend it. Like gypsum or something. Therefore the cast wont break as easily. I did mine differently with a clay mold and patching plaster which actually turned out very nicely.

My former doesn't have a grill; i figured my oven would do the trick (much to the dismay of my parents). I bought a sheet of heavy aluminum from Sears and some splicers so i can fashion some brackets that will hold the frame containing the polystyrene in place in the oven.
I think yours and mine are exactly the same minus a part or two. Basically we'll both heat the sheet up in the oven and then pull it out and then literally run like hell outside before the styrene cools so it can be formed
I think my mold will be either a combination of wood covered with bondo (in specific areas for curvature) or styrofoam covered in bondo (the foam needs to be completely covered and sanded because it will melt on contact with the styrene if it is not covered over). I haven;t decided yet, but wood is looking like a much sturdier option. The problem is, is that making a small unit (mines coined the N64M, or "micro") mold out of wood requires a ton of sanding to get the specs exactly right
I guess i'll just take the voice of the crowd on this one, seeing as i haven't done a mold before and the idea of it breaking gives me advance frustration.

Chrono, if i wasn't such a perfectionist, i would probably settle for a project box. Although they do look really good when done correctly, i want mine to look professional.
Which reminds me, does anyone know where i can find a smaller joystick housing (not the actual joystick, the unit that interprets the data that the stick rests in and moves within) in a third party controller?
