Paper machet?

Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

OMG best idea ever:

Make it out of IMAGINATION. Just sit in a chair and pretend you're playing! This may be the only way to make an xbox portable without lugging a car battery along. 8)

Imagine the possibilities!

These are the reasons that I dont come here much anymore. Because most of you guys are (and I apologize for this) poop egress. All he asked was if you all thought it was possible. Not to poke fun at the idea.

It will work, granted you use enough paper, and have a reasonably sturdy "glue."

Whatever happened to my guidelines to posting that were written to teach all you 11 year-old 1337-m4573r5 to not be flamboyant cock-jockeys?

If you dont like the idea, dont post anything about it. Its that simple. If you think it wont work, post your thoughts on why. But dont belittle his idea, just because you think everything has to be made from the most state of the art plastics available.

p.s.
He could very well get the newspaper for free. I got cable for free for 3 years. They just stopped sending the bill, and kept "delivering" the cable. And if they do pay for it its not like its going to cost a fortune in used paper. it would take much less than on entire newspaper to make his case, so if anything, he would be out water, flour, and some newspaper. All of which are expendable, or extremelt cheap in comparison to plastics, epoxy, and all the other materials many of you find neceassary to making portables.

Yes most were poking fun, but others (me) tried to give a helpful reason as to why it would be cheaper using other methods. I don't think paper mache would stand up to several hours of sweaty, greasy, hot hands holding it, and would be cheaper to go buy a tackle box of the appropriate size. I think you are overreacting just a little.

Minwax makes a "wood hardner" that brushes on. Home depot carries the stuff. Read the directions and work OUTSIDE - nasty fumes. Makes paper and/or cardboard hard as rock.
Buy it, open it, modify it ;-)

Take some wet sand and build a sandbox portable! My sandcastle adventures at the beach have taught me that wet sand is much more rigid than dry sand.

You'll have to do it in under 2 minutes since the sand dries fast. Just poke holes in the sand for buttons and your golden...

'Wet' sand and 'portable' don't really go together.
"Hey let's make our case out of that mud over there! Its sure not to fry anything!"

And although I have done this before (and I learned not to afterwards), you shouldn't bump up threads with jokes like this.
I'd imagine right now you wish you were a cuttlefish...

Hmm...i haven't even built my own portable yet but none the less i can still contribute my ideas towards yours.

you wanted a paper mache case?
WELL theres something i had heard nothing of.
The only way i can see this working is this... Make a wire frame for the box and paper mache around that. When you geta bout 10 layers take another wire frame but this one will cover it like a metal box would. After that you must once again paper mache it (maybe TWENTY layers) Let it harden and there ya go.HOWEVER...im not sure if even 30 layers would be strong enough. and its size could be large

If you really wanted to you could, but you'd have to make it really think and put something on the outside. I hate the crumbly feeling of paper mache...

Dude, this guy has a good point. However, instead of using paper machei(sp?) you could use some fiberglass cloth/mesh or metal screen material and then use fiberglass or platser of paris. Plaster of paris is extremely hard, and if they can use it on walls... only problem is that it is quite heavy, and if its not painted it will have problems with water, just like real walls... I have managed to make some pretty tough stuff with plaster of paris, just mix it up to the consistency you want, make sure there are no bubbles, mold/spread it the way you want, and when thats done you wait for it to dry. Then you have to bake it at around 200 degrees in the oven (or the grill if your mom does not like you cooking non food stuff in the oven, like my mom) and that will drive out all the water. Viola, you have a thing thats heavy and strong as concrete. Just remember to paint it.
