CTFan's N64p

Post by CronoTriggerfan »

If you guys haven't guessed yet, I'm doing an N64p. Updates may be slow and such, because I'm busy over the summer with programming camp and completing orders for people's portables and such, so just bear with me and be patient. I think I'm gonna use a custom built project box so it looks nice and factory made. I do have some questions, though:

1. Where do you guys get your DC-DC 3.3V converter and 100uf capacitor? Radio Shack? A URL would be nice.

2. With my other portables, I could get away with using Ni-MH car batts; now, however, I'm gonna be needing something a bit more.......powerful than a mere 3300mAh  . Anyways, could someone give a link to a good battery for an N64p (using a PSOne screen, by the way), preferrably one that comes with a charger?

3. A good source of nice project boxes that aren't too.....boxy would be nice! Plan on it being portrait format.

4. How hard is it to split up an N64 controller? I really wanted to do a portrait style, but I've never seen one with this system.

More to come,

1. TI use search

2. power101.com

3. impossible, make your own

4. don't think split just run wires out from the rocker panels and hot glue em down so they don't peel up also search for someone has done like four revision of their n64 portrait style

also, if portrait is your bag just leave the controller intact (mostly) and ubild it kinda like ben's cnc built portables

1. check the sticky
2.batteryspace.com has some great batteries, that is were i grab all my li-polys
3. a vac form table my friend :P
4. it would be really easy to split if you didnt include the d-pad, just lengthening a few wires
when life gives you lemons make flux

Thanks for the suggestions! I may want to keep the D-Pad, because I love Kirby.....oh well. And the only reason I talked about making the custom project box is because I have 2 or 3 plastics places around me that will do just that. Plus, one of 'em had a website but I can't remember the damned URL! Other than that, I'd really like to vac-form; it doesn't look too tough to build a vac forming table, so that may be an option, especially since I already have a shop vac!

Another thing- How do you guys hold your pc board for controllers internally? Just dump some bondo or something?

I havent dont it myself, but i've read that a lot of pople here use hot glue, as mentioned above, or use plastic spacers glued with superglue and then place a normal screw into the spacer.

N64 cases are very ergonomic (or whatever that word is) so if you can make it look nice it'll feel good too. for the controller, leave it intact and extendo the buttons/stick with tact switches or the PCB of another controller. power101.com has the best battery prices.

I've been thinking...I'm really wanting to pursue some other portablizing ventures right now, (that will remain unknown  ) and they may require a bit more.......time than an N64p. One thing I've always wanted is a Benjamin Heckendorn original; and in the podcast, he left out the N64 on his list of things never to be sold for portablization by him. Plus, I've been saving my milk money for quite some time for something like this.

Or perhaps an L64.......
