DCP Questions [renamed]

Post by ::DROX:: »

Can someone please give me a list of things I need to make my Dcp?

-Power
-Screen(and what I need to connect it)
-Controllers(how much do I need)

And how to make one
1-Getting it to run off batteries
2-Connecting it to the screen
3-Connecting it to the controller
4-Building a case

This really should be in the Dreamcast forum... But to answer some of your questions:

I suggest the PSOne screen, not sure on how to do the exact wiring.

You only really need one controller. This will be the one you don't fry  . I suggest having extras.

For cases, simply ask around at the case forums  ...

::DROX:: wrote:Power I would say do it like Dkap01, use a GameCube power supply and 2 RC battteries (Ni-MH, 3000mA each)
-Screen(and what I need to connect it) The PSone screen is best, if you can't find or affod one buy a Hip Screen then.
-Controllers(how much do I need) Really you only need to cut the controller into two, that is if you're making it a handheld. Then you connect the traces cut by wires and hardwire the controller's 5 connections to the motherboard. If you're not then just leave them alone really.

And how to make one
1-Getting it to run off batteries
2-Connecting it to the screen
3-Connecting it to the controller
4-Building a case
Please either read the threads about the DCp, or email Dkap01. No one here can give you step-by-step instructions on how to make a portable Dreamcast, we can only point you in the right direction.

I think someone may have actually written a book about making portable video game consoles...

It's a pretty good investment and will answer all kinds of noobish and not-so-noobish questions.

Watch out its another I NEED HELP thread.
Not many people have done a DCp, and if they felt like giving out the information to build one they would have already done it and everyone would be building DCps.
You don't need help what your asking for is just short of getting someone to solder it for you. What ever happened to asking for help when your really stuck on something. It sounds like you haven't even cracked open your Dreamcast. To all new people please open your console first, and then ask questions if you still think you can cram all of those boards, and drives with the addition of a screen, battery, controller, and power supply. Not to mention being able to solder to those tiny contacts (which are only getting smaller and smaller with the newer consoles).
Jeez whats with all these people barging in expecting to build GCps, DCps, and XBOXps. (oh my)

Start with the basics.
- Power
- Audio/Video
- Controllers

Get the pinout of theses, what you're planning to do, and how you're planning to connect them all together.

For example, with the power; You need to know where the pins are for the power input, the pinout (voltages and grounds), and what you're going to use to supply that power. Having a battery(ies) isn't going to cut it, you usually have a battery go to a regulator or converter to control the current and voltage.

A/V, get the pinout of that system first, check portablesofdoom.org, if it's not there check gamesx.com. From there find the pinout for your screen, like a PSone screen uses the same pinout as a PSone so use that, a Hip Screen's pinout can be found via a search of the forums. Once you have those pick the video signal (composite, RGB, VGA, ect.) and use the pinouts you have to wire the console and screen together.

Controllers, simply dismantle the controller and either by opening the port connection or using a multi-meter find what wires go to what contact on the controller port.

There you have the basics. Now please do some of your own work or research.

Well, if you really are as n00bish as you say, why not first attempt a portable that's a bit.......easier  ? Like maybe try your hand at a NOACp, SNESp, or if you are an adventurous little newbie, N64p. As Atkafighter said, you can't come barging into the portablizing community and expect to throw together a DCp. It takes a good, EXPERIENCED portablizer. Why do you think there have only been 2 ever built??!?!? The only person I have seen attempt such a tough first portie and pull it off is Harshboy, but he had quite a bit of tech knowledge coming into the project.

Besides, I played my SNES more than the ol' dreamcast. In fact, there were only about 5 dreamcast games that I really liked. (Shenmue!)
I think you should also go for an older system, but pick one you'd actually like.
If you have no experience, its almost the only thing you should start doing, as they are easier, and some people have written various help topics on the steps of a portable.
