Could a video now be used as a screen?

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

You can run Linux and amulators on some of them though. Check hackaday.

You're thinking the Mattle Juicebox. The Hasbro Video Now is not as potentially useful.

That's not the point. The advantage of the JuiceBox is that it will run a Linux distro, and apps, and has native support for SD cards and stuff like that. I thought that's what you were talking about initially. It's really just a personal media player though. It would probably fit in a Gameboy Pocket with no problems though, if you wanted to grab one and mod it into a gaming device.

If you want to rip its screen and use it for a portable NES or whatever, you're probably out of luck on that front. As with most digital devices, it most likely uses a digital screen, which is no good for direct use in a portable. The other abilities of the Juicebox make it desireable, though.

Code: Select all

Abilities:
Linux
MP3
Video
Apps (Emulation)
If you aren't familiar with coding for linux embedded, it's probably more than you want to tackle now for apps. The Juicebox community has not fully developed anything other than MP3 and video support yet, but I know emulation for NES was in their to-do.

Well, it could surprise you. The Nomad and Gamegear screens were thought unusable for a while....

I went to my local walmart looking for a juicebox but instead ended up buying a Vugo which is simular to a video now except it has A/v ports so you could use it as a screen unfortunly the screen resolution is not amazing and a little blurry

If you can use the JuiceBox, they're $10 at K-Mart right now.

If you want to play your own videos, don't get the JuiceBox. Unless you're a hard-core embedded hacker, you can't get it to work yet.

They work OK as MP3 players, if you get the adapter, and an exceptable picture viewer if you don't mind having to go through the converter. However, the only video you can play right now are the ones they sell.

Checkout the www.linux-hacker.net forum for JuiceBox and http://elinux.org/wiki/JuiceBox if you're interested in hacking the JuiceBox.

BTW, most K-Marts have the JuiceBox for $10 or less in store, as Nick said.
