Questions for the creator of the L64

Dear marshallh

Yes, I am also building an N64. Rather than making my dead-sexy case from a modified Gameboy case, I'd definitely prefer a case from you or even just the woden case you used to make the mold (I can make use of it).

I could use some assistance elsewhere (from other people too). I need photographs and/or schematics of a portable N64, the system itself. I am building four portables right now, between me and three freinds (I do the work and stuff, they just have a system and access to LCD screens).

If you used the PSone lcd screen, how did you power it (or did you do the "LED mod"). How did you remove the "disc" shaped 'chip', behind the LCD screen, or did you remove it at all?

When I begin my N64, I will need a hex-driver. What did you use , and how? Also, are there any more "international" 'Japanese' screws that you encountered while disassembling the N64?

But we're all lazy, so I guess it's ok...

A p64 won't fit in a gameboy case, not even close.

This is essentially it, I had to redo the image because my other computer is off right now, but here's a 'quick separation".


Remember now, the Gameboy will be widened half to one inch wider and also, the N64 can (and will) be split down the middle and literally "folded" with great care of course.

The game there is a sample Genesis cartridge adjusted to the approximate size. The cartridges are similar in size to the N64 cartridges, plus, I'm tired and too "LAZY" to place an accurate-ratio image of an N64 cartridge in the picture.

As for the research, yes, I have done quite a bit, I just want, like I said, a schematic and/or images of the inside of a portable N64. I have done this before and know my 'stuff' I just want a guideline for the system on its early developement.

Eh. The heatsinks sound be too big, where would the battery go, not enough room for buttons.

And on top of that, you can't slice the n64 board in half. Maybe 2/3 - 1/3. And think of all the SMD crap on the back...

I'd like to see you try making it.

good luck splitting the board and re-wiring it together . Make shur you have access to extra N64's because there is a 99% chance you will break multiple ones before you get it right.

1. I did the LED mod on the screen. There's a link to an article on ExtremeTech that shows how to do it, just Google.
2. Although I used a file down copper tube, I'd reccommend using a decent 4.5mm security bit instead.
3. All the screws inside the N64 are metric screws, so you have to be creative in finding screw sizes.
4. I see you intend to shave off the edges of the PCB. I would advise against that, because the PCB has multiple signal layers between the top and bottom. You'll probably muck up something while shaving the edges off, let alone try to cut the thing in half. If it was possible, we would have done it already.
5. Please don't use a gameboy case, by the time you're done it won't look remotely like a gameboy and 90% will be bondo. Instead, build a vacuum forming table (look on Portablesofdoom.org) and cut yourself a block of wood the size you need that resembles the gameboy. It will look much better.

Yes, I am able to do what I say (spliting the board). Also, I have devised a battery plan where you basically can use either multiple 9V batteries in series and, of course, seperating the voltage into the correct terminals. 3.3V@ 2.7A and 12V@.8A. As far as the case, it won't look exactly like a Gameboy, then again, why would I want it to?

It will be seemless and smooth like butter, NO TAPE WOULD EVER BE USED!! I will also use an acrylic paint (for a seemless 'shiny' plastic coat), and will also remove the curren screen cover and replace it with a new one (allong with a scratch protector).

The system has allready been designed to fit within the case with batteries, the LCD screen (5" PSone), the speakers, and the "chopped" controller. If I wasn't going to use this as the case, I could allways use one of the smooth, rounded cigar boxes my friend has. However, the Gameboy case still could be used for my Genesis project (Genesis 3), that's another topic. I will post pictures when I begin, and when I finnish. I don't have the screens right now to actually begin, but I will once I can get them (5" PSone LCD). If you know where I can get them for 30 dollars or less, that would be great!

You'll need 14 9V batteries in parelell to be able to get the N64 off the ground. Use some good AA or C cells, or an RC battery.

You sound like you could be a good potential portabalizer, but you need to learn the facts first.

Yes, because of your computers cache you can still see them instead of the hotlink images.
