Aren't LDO regulators just as efficient or more so?timmeh87 wrote:dc-dc converters arent 100% efficent. 90% if youre lucky

No. LDO regulators are just linear regulators, they still waste quite a bit of power compared to switching regulators (DC-DC converters.)scherzo wrote:Aren't LDO regulators just as efficient or more so?timmeh87 wrote:dc-dc converters arent 100% efficent. 90% if youre lucky
A linear regulator converts any extra energy directly to heat.
Switching regulators pulse on and off with the right timing to get a certain voltage. The output is filtered by a capacitor.

Anyway, just to clear something up, I talked with Digikey a while ago, and they told me that DC-DC converters are NOT the same as switching regulators. The girl I talked to gave me a very long explanation of both of them, showing me the differences between them. And although I don't remember hardly anything that she said,
I can tell you that she said they are both just as efficient. In order of efficiency, if goes like this:
Linear regulator (7805, for instance)
LDO or, Low Dropout regulator (These are just like linear regs, but they stop working, or "dropout" at a lower voltage.)
DC-DC converters and switching regulators (I don't remember
)

how much?
also i have ordered the dc-dc converter from TI and that was free so i'm gonna go with availability and the like.
I just want to use a 12v battery because it is VERY convient and Useful for my needs thanks for all of ya'lls help
