I managed to get my Yobo board wired to my Hip Gear screen successfully! I'm a little giddy right now because when I made a similar attempt many months ago I thought my Hip Gear was fried or something. But by following information found in posts here, I got it to work.

The image looks great considering the controller board isn't even attached the the Hip Gear. I don't even think I need to wire up pots for adjustments at all.

I did what you all said. The Hip Gear is hooked directly to the RC battery while the Yobo is getting its juice from the LDO on that breadboard seen in the pics.

Just yesterday I had the Yobo hooked up to my PSOne screen but I couldn't get it out of my mind how much more power in draws and size it adds. So I figured I'd give the Hip Gear another try. Whoohoo!

Next step is to build a vacuum forming table though I don't have the money for it right now. I do, however, have self-hardening modeling clay so I can design the case in the meantime.

I have a question. Now that I'm using the LDO and the HipGear, can I use less input voltage? Could I get away with 4 x 1.5v alkalines or 5 x 1.2v rechargables?

Heh I have to say I'm with Triton, I just placed two bids on ebay for hip gears with screens after seeing how damn SMALL the thing is, I had no idea!

I wouldve loved to use my PSone screen for my current project but the damn fool round board is about 10mm too big! I've been trying to gauge how I can hack off the sides but I'm worried it might be multilayer, might lose something I need, etc etc.

/edit: Oh there was a question :p Um I really wouldnt try to use less just due to the fact that you havent done an LED mod to the screen. Nearly all the draw on an LCD screen is from the crappy CCFL backlight, so replacing it with much much lower power white LED(s) is a huge savings (as you probably know since you've made it this far).

Understand though that lower voltage batteries MAY mean lower runtimes, as they tend to have less amperage...however I dont think thats much of a problem.

My advise: first, please put a heatsink on the 3705, it may not be working too hard to regulate those batteries but it's just a good idea in case you decide to throw 12v at it.

Scherzo, do you mean you thought you fried the HipGear earlier? I have a HipGear in my room that I have not touched since the day I thought I fried it (I am not getting any video on it or sound, maybe I had it connected wrong). How did you get it working again?

And what is this yobo I am hearing about? Is it cheap? Where do I get one?

Your hip gear is a lot different from all the ones I've seen. It's bigger mostly, but mine HAD to have the adjust pots or you couldn't see a thing at the default settings. Yours looks fine at default.

I have three Hip Gears actually. One of them has a slightly smaller board and the wires are soldered directly to it. The other two have removable wire plug thingys (for lack of a better term).

It was so long ago that I'm not quite sure what was wrong before, but I'm guessing that I wired it incorrectly or the battery I was using was out of juice. Another possibility is that I actually fried the NOAC (Super Joy 3) that I was using at the time. I'm using the Yobo now.

This time around, I almost accepted that it was burnt out again. I hooked it up and I'd get an image for a fraction of a second. I didn't think that the battery almost dead because I had just ran the NOAC with a PSOne screen a couple of days back. But I decided to charge the battery for a few minutes and, tada, it worked.

What most people call the Yobo is a Famicom/NES clone. Yobo is actually the name of the company. The name of the actual product on the box reads "FC GAME CONSOLE". The great thing about the Yobo is that it takes USA NES Carts directly, eliminating the need for a 60-72 pin converter. It also takes NES controllers. I got mine on ebay. I just did a search on ebay for Yobo and it looks like you can get one for about $26 including shipping.

I dunno. It just works. Maybe my other, smaller version of the Hip Gear probably won't be so lucky.

I just managed to get the Yobo working with the smaller Hip Gear, which is probably the same as yours. And, yeah, the video without adjustments on that one is pretty bad but still visible. However, since it's so much smaller that my other Hip Gears I have to use it. It even appears that I can cut off the left and right sides of the board to make it about the same size as the screen.
