Project Nameless log

Post by kronchev »

Name to be revised ASAP.

Anyway I don't have any pictures yet because the "camera" I use is just a still feature on a camcorder, and therefore is a pain in the ass to set up as opposed to whipping out a camera. However I do have some progress that's fun to talk about

Sunday March 26, 3AM
Finally got my Super Joy 3 (revision not-matching-anything-on-the-Internet) to both turn on AND work with my PSOne LCD! This is cool and all but two things, one, I'm not using the PSOne LCD because its too big for my project especially taking into account the absurd controller board, and two, I have no controllers :p It's all wired into a prototyping board. Oh, and for some reason I cannot get sound to work on the PSOne, but when I tried it with my TV in the prototype board, it was fine. Not a big deal, SJ3 screwed up the sound processor.

Oh, and a few hours ago I noticed: I won an ebay auction for a Hip Gear 2.6" LCD controller...for $20 :P Looking at other people's progress this is going to be much MUCH nicer as the thing is tiny, yet usable.

Now to figure out how to get it all to sit nicely, how to get a cheap Famicom adapter (the store I usually go to is closed till the end of the month due to construction :(), and how to get a good power source!

On a sidenote, I still can't get the main 2600 board I play with to work reliably, and it doesn't even want to work with the PSOne :( I just know it's crap with the video circuit, and I really wish I didn't have to have it there, but...the Internet told me to do it. And I didn't have better luck elsewise.

Solder the three headphone leads together for sound, eh?

Eh? I'm feeding sound in on what should be the correct pins, but it's not coming out of the speakers on the LCD itself.

Sorry if you meant something else can you please clarify, my mind is shot :p

There are three pins that require being soldered together.
There is a headphone left pin, a headphone right pin, and a headphone switch. Short them all out with eachother. either with the wires coming out of the wire clamps, or the prongs coming from the clamps. Whichever you choose. And for which pins are the correct pins, check out the sticky in the screen forum.

Hm, I didnt do that, thanks for the tip. Wonder what changed between its original state and modding it that requires it.

When you plug in the headphones, the speakers shut off, right? so there must be a switch somewhere in there. And without the headphone board, the switch remains to where there is nothing going to the speakers. =O

I can honestly say I never used the headphones ;)

OK slight update. I finally got control input to work so that's all fun and such. Slight slowdown though, I was using my friends wire cutters/strippers since mine, well, really suck. Apparantly it's not "normal" to borrow a $5 tool for a weekend without asking a guy you've known since grade school because you didn't think it was worth waking him up to ask (I was working on it a bit at his place and he fell asleep). So uh, for now I'll have to make due, I just can't really cut wire after it's attached anymore because it will be too stressful on the board and probably rip it out :p
Hip
I was attemping to mod a controller by cutting the board as small as possible (into 3 pieces; the d-pad, the AB buttons, and start/select). Can't solder wires on the damn traces though (personal lack of skill I assume) so that turns out to be a waste. I really have to make as much room in an original NES controller as possible.

I desoldered all my connections so I can clean them up a lot more for actual mounting in the...case. However the board looks in horrid condition at this point, mostly due to a few mess ups trying to use lower gauge than can fit in the hole and having problems with that. Now I do have wire that will fit, rainbow wire from radioshack, but the stuff is SO DAMN BRITTLE I might just use some jumperwire I have from a breadboard kit. Its the same gauge but MUCH stronger.

Need to find a Famicom adapter.

Need to somehow get a Dremel (I have one but left it at my parent's house last time I was visiting them. Might bug them to send it to me).

Finally, I just cant wait for my Hip Gear to come in so I have a screen to play with. The PSone is nice and all but its huge, I'm not using it, and the power draw is nuts, I hooked up a 4xAA pack to it and it just laughed at me. I need to also find some white LEDs (back to radioshack I suppose to get absolutly ripped off) and, this will be the most expensive part, find a good power source (those RC ones are awesome cap but huge and ugly. Camcorder batteries are much smaller and look like they would flow a lot better with my design.

Speaking of which I am keeping the design and premise hush-hush until I get at least a model up ;) which I will probably have once I get the screen and get it into parts.

/edit: Looking around I might do a standard into-a-gameboy-case mod. Mine might be cooler but since I'm no bondo wizard, that might be...more doable for my first NES mod.

WELL the screen was delivered Friday...Friday I did not have a chance to get it from the apartment main office. This weekend I was at a LAN, I came by Sunday morn to try to grab it but they didn't open till 11...then I tried to get it later and they closed at 3! Great hours guys...yesterday I went when I could but the person was out with a "will return at 1" sign (this was at 1:30 so I believe someone forgot to set their watch ahead). I will get it TONIGHT I promise.

Because I really want to mess with it :p I wanted it for the LAN, to hook it up right there as a controller (hack the connector to USB, plug it in my vid card...blamo).

I'll try to restrain myself and get some pics of things if I get to work on it much today, since I have to use still mode in a camcorder, which involves setting it up on a tripod, and of course the battery is crap so it's gotta get plugged in...getting lazy as I think of it. But I will push it, FOR THE FORUM AND THE FUTURE OF MANKIND.
