Just to explain, in the U.S. and I believe just about any country, you can not have a copywritten video unless you purchased it and the thing you're downloading is mearly going to be used as a backup. On the flip side these laws haven't stopped thousands if not millions of people from downloading the files. I would becareful on Limewire, everyone can see you and that includes the Internet Police.

Limewire the program is legal. What you do with it determines if you're breaking the law or not.

If you use it to obtain copyrighted materials, then it is illegal. (For example downloading Photoshop or Windows XP) If you use it for legal puropuses (Linux ISOs, videos you made with your friends...) then it's OK.

It's like BitTorrent and Kazaa. The programs themselves are OK to have, but using them as piracy tools is a criminal offense. (I think all the FBI tags on videos and DVDs say unauthorized copying can lead to fines up to $250,000 and a prison term up to 5 years.)

Actually, it depends. If you're canadian Nonsense Man go nuts, as piracy is only looked down on, but is actually legal here.

Unless it was released by the original artist or record company for free distribution, or is old enough to have fallen into public domain (something like 75 years), it's illegal. (So basically everything on the shelves at Best Buy and other retailers.)

Unfortunatly, many things about backups are misunderstood. While you are allowed backups, you must make them yourself. This is why ROMs are most of the time illegal, as well as dvd-rips and such, but not programs that let you rip ROMs from old games or DVD's
Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.

You have a better chance of convincing people that you downloaded a movie in DivX format so that you can play it back on you computer(s) that lack a DVD-rom.

Beyond all the stuff that's been mentioned, which is all of it. Just be careful. I once got caught on Kazaa sharing a screen cam of Underworld. After that I kind of gave up on P2P, then I fought bitttorrnt. It offers more free items and annanimity to a degree.
