Help with almost finished NES

Post by Ghost2520 »

I'm sooo close to finishing my first portable! Anyways... I originally thought I would just keep the 2 speakers taht were on the PSone screen, but I realized that takes 2 watts of power and the one Ben suggested is just .3 watts. Well the one I bought from Digikey (.3) is pretty weak.. So I was gonna use one of the PSone speakers for 1 watt of sound. So how exactly do I do this? You konw the 2 ribbon cables that are for sound/video from the PSone screen? Do I still cut the same wires it shows to in the book? I'm confused.

Personally, I'd say don't even mess around with speakers. Just make a headphone jack. Much easier. Or, just use the PSOne speakers as it says to in the book; that way you know that everything will turn out just as Ben said it would  ! Oh, by the way, what did you end up doing for your case? Could you post pics?

In the book Ben ditched the PSone speakers, I want to keep em! I'm really confused on the wiring for how the speakers get sound from the NES.... any chance someone could draw a paint picture for me? And I can't just go to headphones, I need speakers because I will be playing to player on here and would rather not have a splitter. 8)

Oh, now I get it  . Well, since the PSOne screen originally utilized these speakers and ran them through the same resistors and regulators as it is now, it should work just to connect them as they are. I mean, he uses the PSOne speakers in every other chapter, doesn't he :? ? And how 'bout those case pics?

The case... funny you should mention that... I don't have one yet. I'm goin in before school tomorrow to design it on the laser machine. 8) I wonder if ipod headphones use less power than one of the PSone speakers.... maybe I will just slap a headphone jack in there insetead.

PLEASE MAKE SURE I"M ABOUT TO DO THIS RIGHT! :)
Ok I just read the speaker part for the playstionP and I think I understand it now mostly. So I'm gonna tear the clip for the right speaker off and use just the left. To do this, I'm going to cut the wire off the plug for the right audio and just plug the left audio from screen to the audio out on the NES. Is this right? Thanks.

They do use less power. It's also less of a hassle to get done; at least, for me it was! Also, I finished my portable. Have you seen it yet? Here's the link: http://benheck.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php? ... 1d0ad23abf

Yes I saw your SNES earlier today, very nice lookin. I'm not a red fan though.. I would have gone with something else but thats just me. I edited my post above just as you posted... so can you read it? Or heck... maybe I will just do a headphone after all and get a headphone splitter for when I do two player! So do headphones work like this: wire from NES audio out>headphone jack> headphones? That would be way easier and I could just say screw the speakers! I think I'll head to radioshack in a few minutes.... I need to pick up some dog medicine at the vet anyways. What type of headphone jack or whatnot should I buy?

Yes, you're exactly right! Just don't forget, you have to use Mono audio w/headphones. I know, sounds stupid, but I did it wrong at first  . Oh, and I did red for nostalgic reasons. See, before my SNES, my first gaming memories were of the original Gameboy; it was red  . That's why I also designed the case off of that same Gameboy. For my NESp, which is next, it's gonna be gold. I didn't pick it, my friend did. Then again, he also picked to make the case outta wood  .

EDIT: Get the kind that Ben uses as a charger in the SNESp chapter. They are what I used.

Mono audio? Ok just to be sure... can I get a quick explanation on how exactly I would make it mono rather than 2 speakers so I don't screw anything up

Well, on newer consoles, you find Mono audio next to normal audio output and wire that to the hp jack but... I know on the NES board it's WAY different because it's pre-1990. I can't help you on this one. PM someone like jeep who made headphone jacks on their NESp's.

Meh... I'm at the point where I just want to get this DONE. I guess whats really throwing me in a loop is the nes has one solder point for AUDIO OUT. How the heck am I suppose to wire this to the screen so the screen uses just the left speaker??

Solder the two audio wires for the PSone screen together and solder the audio out to that connection.

In the book I remember reading something about a fuse you can bypass if your screen appears to be dead and it "might" fix it. I'll find the page and stuff for you after when I head back to the workshop.
