French

Post by jeroen »

Hello sorry for the noobish post but I have to get it out of my system. On the schools here in The Netherlands you HAVE to learn French. (don't know about you Americans) But I just keep falling behind more and more. I know learn more and more. But it just isn't my thing. With geography I never was good in learning maps and places to. I can easly (most of the time) learn a piece of text in a jippie but that's logical. French and Geography (places and map exc) have no real logic to them. Does anybody here have the same problem?

English is kind of becoming a universal language, not because our country is nifty or anything, but because we aren't required to learn a second language, and so, by most people's nature, we don't learn it lol. Honestly, I wish i would have been forced to learn a second language when I was younger, it would come in handy nowadays with the widespread use of the internet among people of other countries.

Oh I'm sorry. YOUR country. I wasn't aware that Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, or the U.K. was in America. :P (Not to mention some other countries that I can't mention because I don't know them.)

We gotta learn french up to grade 9 over here in Canada. It's rather amusing. We get to laugh at all the little grade 9's still learning it an struggling with it. We just sit there and go "Ohn hon hon" (The french laugh) and telling them to go mange la merde, si vous plais (never hurts to be polite)
Hey, sup?

I had French class for 3 years and still don't speak a word of it... It was well as long as it was just learning words, in other words, asociate strange letter sequences with words... I had no idea on how to pronounce any of it, but I got 9's and 10's (we Dutch people have a number grading system from 1 to 10 and an occasional 0 when not turning anything in. 10 is best) for those tests, I mostly got 1's 2's and 3's for speaking, 3's only when the teacher was in a good mood and felt like giving a higher score than I deserved :P And then the worst part came, the grammar, I never got higher than a 2 for that :P
I do speak 3 languages anyway: Dutch, English and German.
Well, actually it's 5, I also speak Martian, but that's just like "ah, aaaah, ahahaha, aahhaaaah" and whale, but that basicly any language very slow with lots of tone slidings :P

This year I started taking Russian this, and it's actualy not so bad. I use Rosseta-Stone software since I'm home school, I need to log 80 hours of work/tests to get a credit from the high school that scores me via coursepondence(sp?). BTW. If you are still home schooled G-force look up the North Atlantic Regional High School you send in the work and they will give you highschool credits and a real diploma if you meet the graduation requirments (Record keeping of your work van be a pain but it's not that bad with the system they give you.

in most english schools you have to take a language (usually french or german) and i happen to do french. Most people get to drop it after 3 years, i didnt. Our school had "pathway" systems so the more academic you were the less choice you had in your GCSE courses. for instance most people have to do english, maths, science and humanities, i had to do english, maths, double science, french, humanities and PE. i got to pick only 3 of my subjects

The only word you need to know in French is "Branleur"
Shout it at the next car you see with French plates on it! :D

Where I work in England, it's on a main route from the ferry port so we get a lot of foreign drivers who aren't quite used to driving on the left. When I'm driving to work I'm regularly having to slam the brakes on because of some idiot. For cars with German plates you could shout "Schwein Hund" or "Pemmel Schwein".

(I'm actually trying to learn German btw)
I've often found if people spend less time worrying about what someone the other side of the world has posted on an internet forum and more time getting laid, they'll be a lot less tense.

I got a foreign insults book somewhere and one Italian expression nearly made me fall off my chair!
"I would like to buy your children, how much for the boy?"
