PS2 (Original) Power

Post by Hesei »

I was hoping I might be able to get some information about the power connection from the PSU to the motherboard on an old version of the PS2. I'm not trying for portability, just to put it an a PC case without the PSU. I did a quick little sketch to illistrate my query: just those four pins is what I need to know about.

From what I have read on the forum, 2 of the pins are 12v and the others are ground. But I need to know which they are. I read one thread which said it may be the two outer pins, but there was still uncertainty. Could anyone help clear this up for me?

You should be able to tell which ones are ground by looking at the traces coming off the pins. The ground pins will probably be hooked together, or leading to a ground plane.

I would, but I don't have the psu. I only have the board, power and reset buttons, and the DVD drive. I'm getting a used system sometime soon (come on ebay!), but I just wanted to try and get all the basics cleared beforehand. Guess I shoulda mentioned that earlier lol

From that I am still uncertain. I want to say that the 2 inner pins are the ground, but I can't be sure.

This is the topic that has got me questioning this

Yea I have done thsi before too. Lots of challenges. But tracing where the line goes is a simple and effective way to figure it out. I actually went out and bought a multimeter but i have a feeling i blew the fuse or somthing because it just renders random numbers weather i touch the points to anything....(BTW does anybody know if this is right?) Anyhow!

Ground line usually goes to lotsa places and the power usually goes to regulators especially a main power line like that! If I get time maybe ill check out my old (fried) ps2 and tell u the pinout.... goodluck! and dont let the power line ever touch the ground its how my poor ps2 was fried.....

I'm gonna head out and pick up a used PS2 tomorrow from some guy in the newspaper. Ebay has, at last, betrayed me.
