I wish video came out of the cart but the actual unit converts the data into a playable form its like a ps2 game it doesn't have video out thats why with emulation we hve roms its the cart is just a memory chip nothing else.
Now for the external controller all u need to do is solder off the button points and add a connector like the pic below the famicon is stright on off switch (im pretty sure) and does not have any electronics so a atari 2600 and c64 and sega master system and genesis will work as an external controller if u just solder points off the contacts.
Does this make sense?
Sega Gamegear non-portable

Judging from these 3 links I could conclude that what you said isn't completely accurate. Accurate enough though as the Genesis controller simply has seperate pins for each action, the NES/Famicom/SNES controllers on the other hand have only 1 pin that transfers all input data. So those would need modification.
I don't know about the master system, but I don't expect those to be so different from the Genesis controllers and over here those are much easier to get hold of.

I wasn't sure about the genesis controller (i remember people saying it can be used on the sms) but the atari and sms and c64 just use direct on off.
Problem is that the sms controller doesn't have a start button for use with the gamegear and atari and c64 only had 2 buttons max ther emight of been a special controller for c64 that used 3.
You can use a neogeo stick for this application tho
or u can just convert the data from the genesis back to digital on off.
