Yeah, that looks like a game selector switch. No way to really know unless you switch it and see what happens. Is it connected to any of the cartridge pins? Particulary the top left pin, and bottom right pin (depending on how you have it oriented)
The switch on my unit is connected to one of the cartridge port pins.
The system automatically detects if there is a cart in, there's no need for a switch for that.
Rather, I believe it is a PAL/NTSC switch. I read somewhere that people who couldn't get any video to show up were instructed to flip the switch, and it worked.
Yes, you must desolder the 60-pin connector, and find one of those crazy pinouts that has the wirings of the 72-pin connector, and follow it to connect the 72-pin connector.

You won't short out anything... I once did that with my nesp, and all it did was make weird noises from the audio and a blinking screen when I had the cart in the wrong way.
