mod chips
Have been working on my first portable (a PSOne). I was thinking about putting a mod chip in so that I can play my backups & maybe some imports. I have seen several "4-wire" chips that look very similar. Any advice on which one is the best?

I tried one once. It didn't work at all. And the wiring was PERFECT. I even had my dad (he knows EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING, and is a great solder-er...yeah solder-er, that's a word...) do it again and it still didn't work. So then I tried it on a PSone (the first time was a PSX), and it still didn't work. All I got was a CD read error screen. I didn't break either playstation, but it was a waste of time and money.
I ended up buying a bootdisk (called "PS-X-Change 2") and was extremely happy with it. I would say go with the boot disk and skip the soldering and possibly screwed up chips.

I was in Chinatown, and on the street I bought a boot disc. When I opened the JEWEL case, I found two disks. Out of fear, I put it in my computer to scan on NOrton. Nothing but, disc one was a BOOT UP. And the other a PSONE emulator with a bios. Meh, I got roms of the games I own, handles like CRAP
"Life's a female of the dog species, then you die.."
http://www.psxtune.com/produktee.html I bought the second one from the bottom when I first bought my playstation (the era of the first dual-shock generation). Works like a champ, but, of course the PSOne doesn't have the I/O port needed for that model. My concern with the boot disk is that you have to fool the door into thinking it's closed in order to change the disks (the external I/O chip I have now is the same way; works using a spring). I know that there is a switch that gets put in to act as the door sensor in Ben's PSOne portable design, and I could leave it out, but, being a newb I am trying not to stray from his plans too much. I looked around and saw the site listed above (thinking about the top chip), but, then I saw several just like it:

http://www.modchip.com/indexps.htm
etc, etc,
I'm not too worried about the chip being a total flop because I will pay with a credit card & just take my money back if it doesn't work. Just was curious if anyone had experience with any of these newer generation chips.

my PSX had a mod chip, but the thing that holds the CD in place is busted, and CD player ones don't work well/at all. Try removing one form another PSX, but it broke in the process(there difficult to remove/replace). I should just replace the entire disc reader next time, but i really dont care anymore. Also i had a boot disc, they dont work well for emulators and can't do multi-disk games(and most of the greatest PS1 games are multi-disk)
SNESp - 100%
Protable X - 15% - I need money

I've never had problems with mod chips... I also never used a mod chip with less than 6 wires. Those stealth moels are the best. Especially the multi-mode 8-wire stealth chip installed in a PSX with the I/O port. I could load backups and imports complete with Gameshark codes and all that... ROCKED! Thats actually what I ABOUT to start doing again. I got a 7501 PSX with 8-wire chip coming. I also got my V Mem Card, (plugs in the I/O port... VERY RARE) and Gameshark still... Gonna ROCK! I'm also overclocking it, but thats another story...
