Custom Neo Geo Arcade Cabinet

Yahoo! I finally built my very own Neo Geo arcade machine from scratch:

Oops I left some beer bottle caps in there.... oh well

I’ve wanted one of these for about 15 years now… It has all custom graphics, brushed aluminum side panels and a LED coin counting display that also computes how many cases of beer the money stash will buy. For the “Making Of Story” of this fine unit just click here! Technically it IS somewhat portable as it comes apart in 2 pieces for not-terribly-hard moving.

In other news I will be appearing on “Attack of the Show” on G4/TechTV, October the 14th (a Friday) of this year. Check local listing but I believe it’s 4 PM Pacific time. Hopefully I’ll have some cool new stuff to show, even before it’d be shown on this website so keep your eyes peeled!

Greetings, those of you who saw this stuff in Maxim Magazine!

Apparently the article about my stuff has landed in Maxim so there may be some curious people stopping by. Welcome! Here’s some useful links for interesting things around this site: “Hacking Videogame Consoles – The Book” sub-site

I know it’s been a bit shy on updates around here but I have been working on stuff. Namely Neo Geo consoles and portables, but I have also finally finished my half-lifelong (as in since I was 15) dream project – a full sized Neo Geo 6 slot arcade machine! Hopefully I can get the “Making Of” for it online later today!

Neo Geo MVS Console System

Alright I finished the case for my Neo Geo MVS console!

Shown here next to a PS2 so you can judge the size. It’s about 8.5″ x 8.5″ x 1″ The MVS (arcade) cartridge plugs in the top, and there’s 2 player ports on the front, along with “Insert Coin” buttons (quite the savings over quarters) I used a nice big rocker switch for power, because it’s circular and I like circles.

The case has brushed aluminum top plates and black sides. An acrylic “Neo Geo” logo panel and power switch festoons the front, while a slightly raised acrylic portion surrounds the cartridge.

People Heart Neo Geo!

Ok I must admit I’m surprised at the response my Neo Geo portable (or Neo Geo Peo as I call it) has garnered. In fact I’m actually on building my third unit of these. Problem is it’s a very labor intensive portable, so I have to stop sometime (so I can build my own Neo Geo arcade machine for the living room)

BUT… What if I made some sort of Neo Geo MVS console system? This would be easier, cheaper and probably more useful for the average Neo Geo fan. Plus I love the system so much I feel obligated to do something cool for it, if only to introduce more gamers to the “Best Game They’ve Never Played” – Metal Slug!

So yeah… email me with thoughts, cost estimates (what it’d be worth) re: this console MVS idea.

UPDATE: I have a layout for a MVS console based off a MV-1C board. It would use Neo Geo joysticks. If anyone is interested in funding the prototype and supplying the motherboard let me know. My idea is to develop it and then possibly make kits available.

Neo Geo MVS – Portable System

Ah, finally I get to make a portable version of my all-time favorite arcade system – the Neo Geo MVS (Multi Video System) Coming 1990! Your old system is a PLAIN HOT DOG!

to….

Yes that’s right, it’s the Neo Geo arcade game system we all know and love shrunk down to portable size (8.25″ x 6.5″ x 1″) with a 5″ color TFT screen. And it even runs off the ever classic and always popular 7.2 volt Sony camcorder battery. It takes the standard MVS cartridges that were used in arcades. Granted they’re thicker than the portable itself and almost as large, but what can you do?

This unit was built by request so it’s not for sale as it’s already been spoken/paid for. However if you’re interested as to how I managed to cobble this thing together go ahead and visit the:

Neo Geo MVS Portable Making Of section!

I promise I’ll try and make it interesting! As an added bonus it even discusses how to get stereo sound out of the mono-only MV-1C board. Have fun!

Update on the status of things…

Sorry it’s been a couple weeks since an update. Here’s what’s going on:

  • I’m working on the final audio leveling for “Port Washington” as I wait for the music to be completed (which should be soon) Then I can just plop in the score as it’ll be done!
  • A couple new portables are on the way, including one nobody would probably ever expect (and no, it’s not an Xbox)
  • Still selling Phoenixes! And I’m considering another type of portable to make lots of as well.

It’ll probably be another week or two before I have anything new to report, but more stuff is on the way – that’s for certain!

In the meantime if you’re hankering for some good ol’ fashioned Ben writing why not check out my friend’s movie review site “A Fistful of Reviews” (dot com) I’ve been writing the occasional movie review for him over there as well as a “weekly rant” where I complain about current events in the entertainment world, movies and games. A word of caution – the writing I do for that site is a bit more, hm, “caustic” than what appears here and is better inclined for older readers.

Happy Memorial Day!

Ah yes potato salad… grilled things… beer. Always a fun weekend!  In other news I took down the clock because I realized it didn’t work in Internet Explorer (mostly) and well, you know I just put it there to see if it worked – it was some new site add-on.

In the book section I added some callout help for Figure 4-7 and 4-8, the labeled spots to desolder were a little hard to make out.

Oh and even though nobody believes me Port Washington is close to completion! I’ve been done with it since February and have been waiting for the musical score to be finished. Well apparently it should be done in June, which means I can finish the movie quickly afterwards! The premiere will be in Madison, WI for anyone that wants to attend. More info as it becomes available (and more concrete-esque)
