Adventure64 - The start of my Adventure

Post by lucidPerspective »

Hey guys,

I'm getting all geared up to begin my adventure of my take on a N64p. Bacteria is hooking me up with a N64 board, and PSone screen. He's the man

Just have a quick question, I've been looking around deciding what kind of batteries I should get. I found some pretty sweet NiMH 'D size cells' that were boasting 1.2v and 9000mAh. They are running for about $36NZD ($23USD) ..so I would need 6 to get me up to 7.2v which would be $216NZD ($138USD) - Now that's a little bit steep, and then I read NiMH batteries don't run the best in portables?

So I decided to check out the LiPo route. I'm a little freaked out by them to be honest  would hate to blow myself or my portable up  but I'm guessing they're the best way to go.

I found some being sold locally here: LiPo Battery 7.4v 1000 mAh 15C/20C w/Balance Lead and for $16.90NZD it's a great price!

7.4v would be perfect for a N64p too. But I just have a couple of questions..

Has anyone had any experience with Turnigy batteries?
How do I know if this battery has a protection circuit built in? I'm thinking it will because it's a complete unit, not a single cell.
Also, apart from a smart charger, is there anything else I would need to use this battery (well, 4 of them) safely?
and finally, if these batteries should be good, can anyone recommend me a smart charger that I should be able to get in NZ?

Internets, I request your guidance :D

EDIT: I just realised the same seller is selling the same battery but with 1800mAh instead for $25NZD .. so all questions are the same, but about a 7.4v 1800mAh liPo battery :D

Woah! bargain  and that solves an unanswered question I had too :)

Was wondering what would happen running so close to the min 7v mark as the voltage will drop a bit while the batteries are in use. But I guess using 12v and regulating it down to what I need will solve any problems I might have had.

Although, I am fearful of Chinese LiPo's.. I have heard a lot of things like they work great at first, but then die off pretty quick. Have you personally used these in your projects? Are they still going strong? did you hack the battery pack apart to put into your portable?

Sorry for all the questions

I'm liking the fact they come with a charger and a built in protection circuit!

EDIT: Also, I'm planing on being able to play off wall power while I'm charging the batteries. Do you think going with a 9v switching power supply is safer than 12v? I just remember in a totally unrelated project I blew up a fan that I gave 12v (it was rated at 12v) so I settled to be safe and run it at 9v, only a bit slower anyway. *ramble* *ramble* pretty sure I just answered my own question.. the N64 runs off 7v-min to 12v-max ..so giving it 9v will be fine  why, thanks for my help ^_^ *fades off into the distance rambling*

EDIT: Also, why can't I resize my sig using [/img] ??? >_<

[img] doesn't support size parameters. Resize your signature at the location.

Edit: Or use this:

Code: Select all

Just wondering if anyone can confirm if these can be modded with a Gamecube joystick? 3rd Party N64 Controller

They look identical to the official Nintendo ones, if no-one has tried them out before I'll get one anyway because they're cheap, and let you guys know if they work

I definitely recommend NOT getting that controller, replaced stick with gamecube one and the values are all wrong :(

I'm wanting to change the RAM chips on my board so that it thinks there is an expansion pack. does anyone know what ram chip I could use to replace the N64 ones?

I just relocated my cartridge slot using Ribbon cable and 50-way IDC crimping socket things (THESE) ..it was soooo much easier than soldering wires from the board to each individual pin. I just got a thing that that cable would connect to that had right angle pin headers, soldered that to the motherboard and that was all the soldering I had to do for the relocation. WAY easy :D I really should get a camera so I can take pics :? hopefully I'll have some up sometime next week.

I'm still wondering about what RAM chips I can use to replace the ones on the board so that it thinks it's got an expansion pak in there. anyone have any ideas?
