woud this battery work for a portable n64

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Yes but it is big and bulky.

Yes, it is the one that I used for my portable.
The dimensions in inches are 6x4x1. Not a terribly huge battery, but not one that you would want to try and squeeze into the world's smallest portable. But the battery itself is pretty nice.

did you use the 7805 and how did you connect it to the screen

This is the regulator I used, suggested by Hailrazer. It saves battery power, and you can adjust the voltage down to whatever you need (not just limited to an 8v step down). It is pretty easy to hook up.
