Scratching? Turntables?

Post by Super Cameraman »

Anyone do that sort of thing? I want to get into it, but I have no idea about anything pretty much. I have a basic understanding of what I need, but where do I get vinyl and stuff?

This forum has all sorts of people, I figure someone knows...

I do it.

First off: Just a Warning: If you want to do Actual VINYL...
ITS VERY EXPENSIVE!!!

You basically need your own speaker system, Turntable, Mixer, and any other audio devices you want.
You are looking at $1000 or more for good stuff.

Anyway, Scratching is a form of precussion. Meaning its not meant to be used for Pitch.
You need:
A good Setup
A Great Understanding of Rhythms, Time Signatures, and Beats.
An Ability to Multitask without thinking.

They have classes for it in some places, but otherwise just look up some videos on Youtube.

Really vinyl is as Afro said, Really copulate expensive, and restrictive as to what you can play. I would say buy a cheap USB turntable and soundcard, and use that for awhile. You can play any type of music, even videos, and add tons of effects. I recommend virtual DJ, its what me and my friends use (I'm part of a small DJ company in my town)

I don't know how well a USB turntable will handle scratching. You'll need a good slipmat at least.
