I've been working with an old HP laptop that broke a while back, and I am trying to make a small computer that can either be used as a sort of "book reader/graphics pad", or used to look at pictures.
Here are my questions/ideas:
Do I keep the fans/heatsinks?
--It is a very light-weight platform. Simply a motherboard, monitor, and harddrive.
Do I keep the 101 ports that I won't be using?
--I COULD solder them off, but would some things not work if I disconnected say a parallel port I'm not using?
What case do I put it in?
--I would love for it to be hand-held, light, and as close to a "book" as possible. I am thinking of maybe the case the original monitor came in? It's about 1/3 of an inch though.
That's about it. I just want a nice PC that I can carry around easily and show pictures, edit pictures, hook up devices, etc.

I actually dont know what your skill level is, but laptops are just waiting for something to come along and break them. I wouldn't start desoldering crap from them. Desoldering is a pain. Rip up one wrong trace and kiss the whole laptop goodbye.
