Sony: You are so naive and blind to the world that is going on around you. You have no right to talk about any of this.

If it hasn't been made clear by this point: I'm not only 'flaming' Americans (The term american SHOULD encompass canada, paraguay, brazil, and the rest of south africa...).

I am merely trying to open you eyes to some of the problems of our world, and how easily they can be prevented. I'm not implicating anyone in this. I speak in general. (I guess it may have not come off that way).

Rekarp: I do what I can. I'm a student, after all, paying nearly all my money to the man in the form of tuition and textbooks. I don't buy things I don't need (like dollarstore junk, or pretty much anything except for food). My wardrobe is small and has nothing but t-shirts and jeans, all of which are 100% cotton (biodegradable). I recycle everything I can. I build things from old junk to spare the landfills (Hell, most of us do this just for fun). I drive a fuel-efficient car, and only for transportation to school and back (About 10-15km away, down the side of the old niagra basin ("The escarpment") It's pretty damn steep, I couldn't bike if I wanted to). I turn off my computers when they're not in use. When my laptop is done charging, I unplug the charger from the wall. I do a whole bunch of little things that if everyone did, would add up to quite a lot. That's my point.

In the future, I plan on doing a lot more. It's just right now I can't, I have restrictions on time, money, and travel. But I do what I can.

That just sounds like being a cheapie. I am talking about going out of your way to help people and the environment.

Yup. For now it'll have to do.

I'm in engineering, and you know more than most here that there ain't any time or money to go out and help anymore.

Like I said, in the future.

then stop being so accusatory and hypocritical when other people in much the same situation are doing much the same thing as you. when im not using my PC i shut it down (every night unless im torrenting something) i use CCFLs when i can and when i move in to my own house the whole thing will be LED lit. i dont go out and buy new useless junk unless i cant find a cost effective alternative and i dont throw ANYTHING away except garbage, prefering to reuse or hold on to things on the off chance that i can make use of it in some way later on. we recycle our cans and bottles. i buy nearly everything i own used etc. the fact that living frugally and being environmentally conscious happen to coincide is simply a bonus.

TL;DR get off your high horse, your no better than most of us regardless of what you may think

Hold on I am in Engineering to! 11th Best Electrical Engineering program in America (which means its one of the hardest :P) I still find time to go down to the Austin Yellow Bike Project. Before that I worked +120 Hours at Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Coalition in Houston. Before that I was in the Scouts where I received Eagle. For my Eagle project I put together a anti-erosion setup for a local park.

Lets see I ride my bicycle to any location under two miles (campus is 1 mile away) and ride the public buses else where unless I need to grocery shop. All my lightbulbs are now the CF type bulbs. Including the porch lights. I installed a low flow toilet a couple weeks ago that I got for free off of Craigslist.

Low flow toilets are just urinals. I have one and my beastly poop clogs it every time.

My dad's friend paid a ton of money for a toto toilet with two buttons: number 1 (low pressure) and number 2 (high pressure for your beastly poop). The newer ones are supposedly better than the older low pressure toilets. If you have to flush twice (or more), that kind of defeats the purpose of having a low pressure toilet.

Hah. 1 low flush is enough for my family. :P

Triton: I'm not implicating any of you (Except Marshall). I AM implicating the majority of Americans (Which Benheckers are not) for wasting energy. We're the new generation of more energy and environment conscious people. But that doesn't mean we're doing everything we can.

should be:
We're the new generation of sheeple who believe we're too blame for everything that's wrong with the world.
This generation is full of self-imposing hippies who believe everything they're told about how bad their lifestyle is for the world and that they're responsible for making other people change their lifestyle. At least 60's hippies had cool vw vans and Jimi Hendrix instead of sh***y priuses and dave mathews.

Ok for starters.

We don't spend half of our federal money on the military. They get a base of 250 Billion a year, extra if we're in a state of war. When you compare that to the 350 Billion that was thrown at the banks to fix the credit problem... well you do the math. Also to make something abominably clear, we are not at war! The war ended when Saddam was caught. It is officially an occupation.

Now lets see where to go from here.

The energy deal. You talk about it as if the energy can be saved. Sorry but as electricity it can not. Yeah coal and oil resources can be reduced, which would be nice. Considering that we do import too much oil from the Middle East anyway.

Now as for helping with health care. The only thing that really needs to be done is at most and I stress this to no limit, is that the health care providers start being competitive rather then gouging. Really they don't compete for people's money because they don't have to worry people are going to pay one way or another.

Now littering. Lets think about this, we have originations like Green Peace that will tell everyone that there is garbage in the ocean, but do nothing else. I'm all for helping to reduce and recycle but everyone needs to help. And also recycling is big money in Michigan, we have a $0.10 return on our bottles so they are not thrown away. We even have the blue bin curb side pick up now, so there is no reason to not recycle it's as easy as putting the stuff out like the garbage.

Now as for your global justice creed, that's been answered well enough. You can't throw money at a problem and hope it goes away. That's like giving a drug addict pain killers during with-drawl, it's only going to make the problem worse.

Sorry but unless it's made to be a priority people don't want to have to change their life style. That's true about all people, rich or poor, educated and uneducated, black or white, fat or thin, ect.

So unless you're going to take the first step and work on making thing better by doing what you suggest we "Americans" do, you can clearly shut the hell up you hypocrite. I'm sure you can can get along with your pal Al Gore who's in the same boat. Preach but don't practice.

Yeah, people who live in Ohio, who live near the border come up here to scam the $.10 deposit. Reminds me of that seinfeld episode where they take Newman's mailtruck up to Michigan, full of cans.
