This sounds like an interesting project, I'm tempted to make one just for the fun of it. The best idea I got would be to use a pc controller, have the ball joint that the stick is mounted on act as the analog stick and install a c stick for use with the thumb and a, b, start, r and z are buttons usable by all the rest of your fingers (wouldn't bother including the dpad/l trigger cuz there aren't enough games that use them).

I was just thinking... Why not use a PC Emulator?

You could then map all the controls to the joystick that's connected to your computer.
Seems like it would save a lot of time and money and the kid could play a lot more than N64...

But the thing is with emulators, he'd have to turn on the computer, log on, start the program, and select a game. With the actual console, you just gotta flip a switch. Which do you think a kid would prefer doing?

As a "kid" I prefered the emulators because of all the extra stuff I could do like "texture packs" and even using different controllers and making the graphics look better with different plugins. Getting higher resolutions than the original console... It was joy!

Isn't this forum about using the original hardware? If you have an n64 and games your kid likes, and it's his favorite system at this point in time, why not make a controller for that system? Who says that they even have a computer that can emulate the n64 well?
Maybe we could just get an n64 controller to usb adapter if it's such a big deal? I'm sure they exist.
