I can find no specific reason why dragons couldn't have existed, biologically speaking. Such an animal wouldn't violate any physical laws as far as I can tell. Breathing fire is probably biologically possible in some way or another. I agree on these points.

I do not think dragons portrayed in the majority of myths and lore existed, nor do I think animals from which the stories were based bore any real resemblence to those in the stories. The evidence of such creatures is just not there- and yes, evidence would exist. Evidence= remains, skeletons, ecological disruptions, historical records, and etc.

Evidence would be sparse, true, but- if lore and legend are true- it would be there. Any significant interaction with humananity would generate lasting evidence in the form of records- tax deficits, trade disruptions, records which could be cross-referenced. There would be an intricate web of different evidence all supporting the same conclusion, but it isn't so.

Unless you can produce evidence or logical arguments to your favor- rather than just picking apart this post- then my view and the views of others will remain unchanged.
Also, there are many, many ancient tales of humans killing dragons. That hurts the invincibility argument.
That is the way many stories work. The protagonist defies all odds by defeating a stronger antagonist. He was not calling dragons invincible. He was saying that dragons were yet another powerful antagonist for a hero to defeat.

Alright my comparisons were far too specific, the point of my ramblings was that the dragons found in the lore of various cultures are purely symbolic of similar abstract concepts (similar, not identical), and that IMHO it is far more likely that different cultures symbols would resemble each other as a result of representing similar concepts as opposed to resembling each other because they are based on common real creatures with similar in characteristics to the symbols themselves. *takes breath*

That seems unlikely. In Europe, dragons seem to hold such a position. That's not surprising. I know I would not be too comfortable if I was face to face with a large reptilian creature.

However, in other cultures dragons appear to have been revered and worshiped or considered to be signs of good luck.
True, but maybe they chose to give in rather than fight back; or maybe the dragons liked them better.
: P
Or it could be the other cultures weren't immediately hostile, like the Europeans were known to be in medieval times.

Well if dragons are a myth like war of the worlds(I'm not saying they are), then wouldn't it make sense that a proud knight would claim to have killed a dragon? I mean, Bam! Instant fame and fortune.
Why is it that every time I post in a thread, it dies?

You've got to think here, Dinosaurs make up of a VERY small portion of the fossil record, almost 99% percent of which is made up clam shells and such. So there's a possibility that dragon fossils(and possibly billions of other kinds of creatures) simply weren't preserved like the very few fossils that we have. Besides, the way science thinks the way dinosaurs/dragons looked are educated guesses at best, so it's possible the T-rex for instance might have been some hairy-fire-breathing menace with three eyes on each side of its head for all we know  . Heck, maybe science might have put together a few dinosaur skeletons that are be made up of different species of dragons whose parts seem to fit together.

As I have pointed out earlier, it would be highly unlikely for remains or skeletons for an animal that died a thousand years ago or three thousand years ago to exist today. There is as much physical evidence that dragons existed a few thousand years ago as there is evidence that crocodiles existed a few thousand years ago-- except that we can go out and see a crocodile today. It would be highly unusual for such physical evidence to exist.

I am not sure why you mention ecological disruptions. We really don't have enough information today to make such a measurement about a thousand years ago.

However, there are plenty of "historical" records of dragons. The problem is that the concept of "history" has really changed significantly over the last two thousand years. Modern analysis techniques and attempts to objectively record information are a fairly recent phenomenon. Most writings which have survived the last few thousand years, though, are highly embellished and do not provide a clear distinction between what is real and what is fancy. Unfortunately, these are all we have to work with.

Again, we have relatively few official written records from this period of history. I mean, we have a decent collection of official records from the Roman Empire, because they were all over that stuff, but in general they aren't there. If you just want to look at surviving human history written prior to the last 500 years or so, you'd have to conclude that there are only a few different types of animals at all. And depending on your standards of what counts as history, dragons could well make the cut. Also, by excluding said documents, you would essentially be begging the question.
Unless you can produce evidence or logical arguments to your favor- rather than just picking apart this post- then my view and the views of others will remain unchanged.
Oh, I am certain that the views of most people will not change. You seem to think that I am trying to convince you that dragons as depicted in third-rate fantasy novels and movies exist or did exist. That is not an unreasonable thought, but I actually am not attempting to do this.

I am simply attempting to show that it is possible that a dragon-like creature or creatures existed. To do so, all I really need to do is pick apart the criticisms and arguments against their existence.
Also, there are many, many ancient tales of humans killing dragons. That hurts the invincibility argument.

Actually, I was referring to the specific invincibility aspect. "War of the Worlds" was the comparison given. If you've read the book, heard the radio teleplay or seen the movie, you would know

*spoiler alert*
*spoiler alert*

That the humans never, ever had a chance in that story, and there was no triumphant hero overcoming the evil aliens. It was basically an act of God that wound up saving humanity.

*spoiler over*
*spoiler over*

If the story is one of triumph where a human kills a dragon, the dragon's existence is clearly not to show that humans are not invincible.

Writers are free to use dragons to represent plenty of other things, though. I think the original poster who mentioned dragons as simply literary figures has clarified that this is not what he meant anyway.

This would only make sense if the people being told this had some real reason to believe that dragons existed and were worthy of fear.

If you tell me you defeated Lord Voldemort or the Minotaur, I wouldn't be impressed.

All I can say about Dragons is this: Força FC Porto!

If you don't understand, then try understanding it instead.
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

OMG... I was listening to music while reading this thread... and out of 1576 songs that I have open in Winamp right now, Trogdor seriously just started playing.

I do not believe Dragons exist or ever did exist. It would be sweet if they did, but I think there'd be undeniable proof if they had.

On a side note, did any of you guys see the movie Eragon? I friggin' loved that movie! EPIC! :D

It is possible that dragons existed during the timespan in question, and that they slipped by detection of all sorts by modern science. It is possible, but highly unlikely.

Shall we now argue over whether it is highly unlikely or not?

Yes, certainly-- though I'm about to be out of internet access for about five days.

I think you have an awful lot of faith in these "detection methods of modern science." We don't have time machines, and we really only have a miniscule observation window through which to attempt to extrapolate data several orders of magnitude outside of our observation abilities.

Assuming that all life evolved over the past 4.3 billion years, the fossil record is incredibly sparse. Many species which MUST have existed for millions of years have left virtually zero evidence of their time on earth. In fact, MOST species which must have existed for millions of years have left virtually zero evidence of their time on earth. We only believe they existed because of gaps in the fossil record and the lack of transitional fossils between species.

If most species that have existed have left zero evidence of their existence on earth, how is it "highly unlikely" that a particular species or group of a few species left no physical record three thousand years ago?

I had a close encounter with a dragon today. Here's the full story:

I was at work today and I had to go to the bathroom. So I went to the pisser and took a leak, and then the dragon appeared. I looked at the little bubbles that appear in the toilet after you take a leak and noticed something peculiar. The bubbles had arranged themselves to be the shape of a dragon  .

When you got to this point, I was expecting the dragon to attempt to trap you in a bubble and pop you against a wall to turn you into a treat.

But congratulations on your close encounter and safe return.

Let's see the scoffers answer that one!
