OK, you edited a post to post some ramblings about my warnings...hang on, exactly WHY THE FLYING FIG do you need those things anyway to salvage? I thought this was a PSONEp?!

Oh, no no. I'm not using the capacitors. but perhaps someone else will...
the ps1 does not need 200 volt capacitors, but rather avoids 200 volts.
I will probably either
a)sell them in the trading post

b)save them for a rainy day....

c)feed them to a 5 year old with him thinking it's candy.....

or.....since this is fun,......plug too much voltage into them so that they blow up. just becareful that no shrapnel hits your eye...that happened to me once......that's why I wear glasses.....

Ok, i'm sorry...but i can't keep my mouth shut about something so blatantly not true, it wouldn't be fair to the people reading who actually believe you.

The whole thing is a switching power supply, there is no "switching regulator" in there. There are controller ICs that control the switching pattern of MOSFETs, which control the current through those toroidal (the donut ones) inductors. The little transformers you saw in there are purely for isolation from the 120v AC coming from your wall. The wall voltage is rectified, charge is stored on the big capacitors, and that semi-DC voltage is switched at a high frequency "through" the transformer to the other side. Since the transformer is now in the way...it makes it so you dont electrocute yourself when you do something stupid like touch something inside your computer while it's on.

If you're really interested, use google. One transformer isolation technique is called a flyback converter, and then after that my guess is that they use buck converters to step the voltage down to the proper levels.

Yes...they do make "switching regulators", but they can usually only handle a few amps of current because the internal switch is too small. You're much more likely to find switching controllers. Even still, taking them out of a power supply will probably do you no good because the datasheets for those components are almost impossible to find, trust me...i've tried.

i started a ps1 laptop a while a go. i havent worked on it in a while because my screen broke.

you probly know this since you helped me fix it last time but i broke it again.
so it might not be the first in the world.
but you probably finish yours first.

WOW....I didn't know so many people were making laptops.....well...I think the screen in my nesp is faulty, but I truthfully just don't care about that project anymore....it was so badly designed that it can barely be screwed together...(no offense ben...

...) But hey, it was my first portable and i've learned a lot, so it counts. the ps1 laptop should be constructed in no time...that is...when I get a ps1 I can use...I can never hack the first system I get (this was my first ps1)
Did you ever get the laptop working? if you did, i'd love to see it.
your's will probably be better than mine as mine will be constructed out of cheap and easy parts, no case building is required.
I started a thread about making laptop cases by just using a lunchbox or cashbox. Good luck.

well.........bic...........you said the parts weren't rare..you're right. I didn't realize it. But I have something from it that might interest you. remember that old thread that you posted that said you have a bad computer fan? I have a leftover fan that is quiet as friggin hell.
